Suniel Shetty on Hera Pheri 4, “Like all good things, this one took some time”

After literally waiting for years, the official announcement of the third film in the Hera Pheri franchise happened last month. The film will see the return of the famous trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal in the roles of the iconic characters Raju, Ghanshyam aka Shyam and Baburao Ganpatrao Apte respectively. Shetty has penned a long note expressing his happiness on the green signal for the third film in the series, which is called Hera Pheri 4. In a LinkedIn blog post, the actor wrote, “So Hera Pheri 3 is finally happening! Look forward to being back on set with Pareshji and Akki (Akshay). Like all good things, this one took some time, but it’s a relief to finally have an answer to this question! Films are such a huge part of our culture, and yet, not many understand what goes into making a film. Apart from creative challenges, the business model and needs of the movie business make it as challenging as any other.” While elaborating on the process of making a film, Shetty added, “But let's just say having a good script, a set of actors and a director is literally just the start point. There’s the financing of a movie. It’s usually studios or production houses, which invest their own capital. Their teams assess the viability of a project before deciding on the budget.” Speaking about his own understanding of the complex process of making films, Shetty concluded saying, “33 years and 125 films later I don’t have it all figured out, but I will keep getting better at it.” Titled, Hera Pheri, the first film released in 2000 and it was directed by Priyadarshan. The sequel, titled Phir Hera Pheri, was helmed by the late Neeraj Vora and it released in 2006. Hera Pheri 4 will be directed by Farhad Samji. Priyanka Chopra on being called ‘black cat’, ‘dusky’ in Bollywood: ‘I thought I was not pretty enough’

Priyanka Chopra has risen to global fame. After a successful career in the Hindi film industry, the actress ventured into Hollywood and has starred in many projects and headlined the ABC series Quantico. As she gears up for Citadel, the actress recently sat down for a conversation about women in films, South Asian identity and pay parity. She discussed about body shaming and being called ‘black cat’ in the film industry. Speaking after she was mentioned on the BBC 100 Women list for 2022, Priyanka Chopra recalled being shamed for her complexion. “I was called 'black cat', 'dusky'. I mean, what does 'dusky' even mean in a country where we are literally all brown? Of course, that comes from our colonial past, it's not even been 100 years since we shed the British Raj, so we still hold on to it, I think. But it is up to our generation to be able to cut those ties and change it so that the next generation doesn't inherit the equity placed on light skin,” she told BBC. "I thought I was not pretty enough, I believed that I would have to work a lot harder, even though I thought I was probably a little bit more talented than my fellow actors who were lighter skinned. But I thought that was right because it was so normalised," she said. Meanwhile, with Citadel already gearing up for the premiere in April 2023, Priyanka Chopra has lined up her next project. The actress is set to executive produce an upcoming limited series through her banner Purple Pebble Pictures (PPP). Amazon Studios is developing the project titled Assume Nothing, which is based on Tanya Selvaratnam’s memoir of the same name. Priyanka is also in talks to star in the same. Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra has Citadel set on Prime Video with Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci. The series is set to premiere on April 28. She also has a movie Love Again releasing in theatres on May 12, with Sam Heughan and Celine Dion. MM Keeravani reveals he will not be performing live on ‘Naatu Naatu’ at the Oscars; says, “I don’t think I’m in the right shape to be doing a live performance”

M M Keeravani is currently in the US gearing up for his big night at the Oscars on March 13. He is confident and excited about the big night. “The closer it (the Oscars) gets, the more I feel that we will bring the Oscar home. Is this a lot of pressure on me? Not at all. The world is dancing to ‘Naatu Naatu’. No one can take away what rightfully belongs to the song,” says Keeravani. At the Oscars ceremony, the singers Singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava who have rendered the globally sensational ‘Naatu Naatu’ will be joining Keeravani the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles. Or perhaps, “joining” is not quite the plan. Explains Keeravani, “The singers will perform the song. I won’t be joining them. I don’t think I’m in the right shape to be doing a live performance. Some day in the future, after I get time to work out, you may see me on stage. Not now. Not at the Oscars.” As the big day approaches, Keeravani gets less and less anxious. “The RRR team and I have been attending so many awards in the US, and the song has unanimously been hailed as the musical sensation of the year. Sobhita Dhulipala opens about ‘life coming in full circle’, from being rejected as a background model for a brand to being its brand ambassador

Sobhita Dhulipala, who is one of the self-made stars in Bollywood, recently has been busy promoting the web series The Night Manager. The actress, who has been a part of some prestigious projects like Ponniyin Selvan, opened up about the kind of transition and culture-shock she experienced as a teenager who shifted from Vizag to Mumbai. Recalling her initial days of modelling and giving auditions for TVCs (Television Commercials), Sobhita revealed that she was rejected as a background model for the skin and haircare brand L’Oréal and then later, being signed on as one of their brand ambassadors. During her interview with Mashable India, Sobhita Dhulipala discussed her journey, starting from her early modelling days to becoming an actress. In the same, she opened up about how she faced several rejections because she didn’t fit the conventional standards of beauty. She said, “I never got even one because they told me I was not pretty or appealing”. The actress went on to add that during her college days, she did not believe that she was good-looking because she felt out-of-place in terms of fashion and style. So when she got rejected from modelling assignments, she would often believe it to be true because she was not confident about her looks. She added, " I was like, ‘Yes, obviously,' bachpan ka woh trauma tha, woh sach bol raha hai (because of my childhood trauma, I believed that they were saying the truth).” Sobhita went on to recall about her L’Oréal experience saying, “Mujhe voh bhi nahi mila (I did not even get that).” She continued, “Background mein bhi reject kia tha (They rejected me as a background model also).” She concluded the experience, “I was with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, passing shampoos, doing the ad, and I just felt it’s nice to be here,” she said. Coming to her recent project The Night Manager, the web show is a remake of John le Carré’s novel by the same name and stars Aditya Roy Kapur as well as Anil Kapoor as the two essential characters with Sobhita’s role as Kaveri acting as a crucial catalyst. REVEALED: No change in release plans; Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar to arrive in cinemas on March 8, as originally scheduled

Last week, Bollywood Hungama reported that there could be a change in the release date of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. The makers of the Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer were contemplating releasing the film on Tuesday, March 7, instead of Wednesday, March 8. The thought emerged as the makers thought that it’ll be wise to take advantage of the Holi holiday in several states on March 7. However, we have not learnt that the prepone plans have been dropped. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “There is no change in the plan. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will release on March 8, as originally scheduled.” The source further said, “A lot of last-minute prep is going on with the film and the makers feared that releasing a day earlier might add a lot of stress to the already overworked team. Moreover, even internationally, the plan was locked for March 8. Hence, a decision was taken to release Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar on March 8.” The source added, “The makers are confident of a healthy opening, though it’ll be a working day in several states on March 8. But thanks to considerable hype and youthful appeal, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar can score on the partial holiday on Wednesday. And let’s not forget that Women’s Day also falls on March 8 and that can further boost the footfalls.” A trade expert quipped, “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will enjoy a five-day weekend and then there’s limited competition till the release of Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa. If the film clicks with the audience, it’ll be the second hit of 2023 after Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.” Besides Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar also stars Dimple Kapadia and Anubhav Singh Bassi. Bollywood actor and musician, Farhan Akhtar, has stated that “unforeseen circumstances” will prevent him from appearing in Australia less than two days after his performance in Pune. Over the weekend, his band FarhanLive was scheduled to play in Sydney and Melbourne. He shared the information with his followers on Instagram. Farhan Akhtar announced the cancellation of his band's tour in Australia this month on his Instagram account. The actor also voiced his dissatisfaction with the unexpected developments. Deepika Padukone speaks on remaining calm during Pathaan controversy: “All we know is commitment, hard work and humility”

After consecutive flops in 2022, Bollywood started 2023 on a high note with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan creating history at the box office while breaking and making records. Though the song ‘Besharam Rang’ created controversy, it did not affect the performance of the film. Interestingly, during the entire controversy, the star cast of the film, SRK, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham remained tight-lipped. However, a month after the release of Pathaan, Deepika opened up about it and credited her and Shah Rukh Khan’s sports backgrounds for helping them to sail the Pathaan controversies. It all happened during DP’s interview with India Today. Speaking of the same, she asserted, “I can say this for both of us we don’t know any other way of being. I think that’s just who we are as people and the way we have been brought up by our respective families. We came here [to Mumbai] alone with just dreams and aspirations. All we know is commitment, hard work and humility, and it has gotten us where we are.” She further explained, “Some of it [handling adversity] comes with experience and maturity. We both have been athletes. I do know that he played sports in school and college. Saiyami Kher to essay the role of a para-athlete in R Balki's sports drama Ghoomer

Saiyami Kher will soon be seen in R Balki’s Ghoomer, an emotional and inspiring sports drama. Saiyami plays the role of a para-athlete, a cricket prodigy. Although she grew up playing cricket, this role was especially challenging since she had the role of a para-athlete, something she had to work hard to get into character. Siayami says, “I play the role of a left-handed bowler in Ghoomer and, for me, in real life, I am a right-handed player. I could never actually step into the shoes of a real-life para-athlete, but even the small hurdles I had to overcome being an athlete myself, reminded me of things we take for granted. Preparing and filming for Ghoomer opened my eyes in a way that I never thought would happen to go into it. It was a physically and emotionally challenging time, but my struggles were minuscule when compared to those heroes who make our country proud by participating in so many sports as para-athletes”. Ghoomer, which is expected to release in 2023 is a movie about a sports prodigy and also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Angad Bedi and Shabana Azmi in pivotal roles. For the romantic track, Rishi Kapoor and Sridevi in Chandni are the reference points. In 2021, Bollywood Hungama was the first to reveal the title and cast of the upcoming family-centric movie. Starring Gully Boy pair Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead, the film's cast also includes Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi in pivotal roles. Jaya, who has worked with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Na Ho, plays Ranveer's grandmother whereas Dharmendra and Shabana play Alia's grandparents. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani has been postponed to July 28. The film was earlier supposed to release on April 28, 2023. In a recent interview, the actor, who insisted on giving up his Canadian citizenship for Indian citizenship, also opened up about his recent failures at the box office. The superstar also requested everyone to not blame the audience, further taking up the blame on himself about his films not working. In his interview with Aaj Tak, Akshay Kumar opened up about the performance of his recent theatrical releases, and said, "It is a great alarm, aapki film nahi chal rahi to galti aapki hai (If your films are not working, it is your fault). Dunki director Rajkumar Hirani speaks highly of Shah Rukh Khan; says, “Sometimes I have kept two days for a shoot and he finishes it in two hours”

Javed Akhtar recently went to a festival in Lahore to honour the author Faiz Ahmed Faiz, where he learned that Indians believe all Pakistanis to be terrorists. In a sharp response, Javed stated that the terrorists of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks continue to roam freely in Pakistan. Yesterday, it was reported that Sanjay Dutt has been cast in Hera Pheri 4. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Sanjay Dutt has indeed signed the film. It is said that he’ll be playing one of the antagonists in the film. His character is blind and is quite quirky. He’s expected to add to the madness quotient of the Hera Pheri series.” The source further said, “Sanjay Dutt is superb in comedy roles and the makers felt he’ll be right for this role. Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has been making headlines everyday be it for Javed Akhtar or nepotism. Recently the actress made news for taking a dig at Karan Johar for his film Selfiee. On the day when Selfiee was released, actress Kangana Ranaut criticised the movie on her Instagram page. Featuring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead, the film is directed by Raj Mehta. Raju, Shyam and Baburao to go international in Hera Pheri 4, “They will do Hera Pheri globally,” reveals Paresh Rawal

The news about the third film in the Hera Pheri franchise was out two days back on February 22. A leaked photo of the famous trio from the series – Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal – along with the team were spotted shooting a promo for the movie in a studio in Mumbai. Interestingly, despite it being the third film in the franchise, it is titled Hera Pheri 4. There is a lot of curiosity among the fans to know what the next instalment of the series has in store. It is now learnt that this time, the Hera Pheri trio of Raju, Shyam and Babu bhaiya, played by Akshay, Shetty and Rawal, would travel internationally. Rawal revealed this in a conversation with Mid-Day along with the shooting schedule of the film. “We’ll begin shooting in three months,” he told the publication. “It will be a (long) schedule in Mumbai. The movie will also be shot in international locations like Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Los Angeles, as Babu bhaiya, Raju and Shyam go abroad. They’ll do hera pheri globally.” Rawal was happy to meet his co-stars for the promo shoot recently. “Meeting them felt like ghar wapsi. It’s always a joy shooting with Akshay and Suniel. They are talented actors who are not insecure about their work. We have mutual respect. Our off-screen camaraderie reflects in our on-screen chemistry,” he further told the publication. Earlier, there were reports about Kartik Aaryan replacing Akshay in the third part of Hera Pheri. Reacting on this, Rawal revealed, “As far as I know, initially, both Kartik and Akshay were to do the film, but it didn’t work out. I don’t know what happened.” The first film in the series, titled Hera Pheri, had released in 2000 and it became a cult classic. It was directed by Priyadarshan. But Neeraj Vora took onto the director’s chair for Phir Hera Pheri, which released in 2006. Hera Pheri 4 will be helmed by Farhad Samji. Ali Zafar slams Javed Akhtar for making insensitive statements on Pakistan

Ali Zafar, a Pakistani actor and singer, criticised Javed Akhtar for his remarks about the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks at the Faiz Festival in Lahore last week. Ali had previously taken to social media to share his happiness over singing in front of Akhtar recently. He talked about his love and loyalty for his country in an Instagram story. He also wrote about the impact that Akhtar's insensitive and uncalled for statements can have on so many people's feelings. He took to his Instagram Stories and wrote, “Guys, I love you all and truly value your praise and criticism equally. But I always request one thing – verify facts before reaching any conclusion or judgement. Boney Kapoor recalls the first time he met Sridevi on her 5th death anniversary; filmmaker shares videos in her memory

Boney Kapoor and Sridevi were one of the most beloved couples of the industry and her demise definitely left the entire Kapoor family in shock. Boney, who often recalls his memories with her, posts about it on social media and today on her fifth death anniversary, the filmmaker took to Instagram to share two video clips from the India Today Woman Summit, which had Sridevi as the Chief Guest. In the video clip, Boney Kapoor is seen in the audience and he was handed over the mic to talk about the Indian actress. During the same, he recalled his first meeting with her. In the video, Boney Kapoor recalled how it was love at first sight for him when he saw her in one of the Tamil films. "It happened the first time I saw her on screen, this was probably in the late 70s, when I saw one of her Tamil films. I said to myself that this is someone I would want to have in my film. We were planning to make a Rishi Kapoor film those days. I had bought the rights for a film.” In the same video, he also added that at that time he was working on Rishi Kapoor film. Although Rishi had not read the script before speaking to the Kapoor actor, Boney took off to Chennai to meet Sridevi in a bid to sign her as the leading lady. However, he added disappointingly that he couldn’t meet her then because she was in Singapore shooting for one of her films, adding, “She was always on my mind.” Later, he went on to talk about how he loved her Hindi film Solva Sawan (a Hindi remake of her Tamil film 16 Vayanthinile) and how it had an impact on him. Boney further added that he was waiting for the right opportunity which he got with Mr. India. "I went up to her set, met her. When I met her, it was almost like a dream come true. You know, she is an introvert and doesn't communicate very easily with strangers, and I was a stranger at that point of time. The few words that she spoke in broken Hindi and broken English, they touched me and moved me. I got more curious to know her. Nawazuddin Siddiqui dowry case dismissed by Mumbai court

Readers may be aware that for the past few days, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is in news after his ‘former’ wife Aaliya Siddiqui threw major allegations against his family, including that of house arrest and as well as forcing her and their children to only use selected facilities within their residence. Along with her complaint, she had also alleged that Siddiqui and his family are harassing her for dowry and had moved the court regarding the same. However, as per recent reports, the Mumbai court has dismissed her pleas after their divorce documents were presented. In recent reports, lawyers Adnan Shaikh and Drishti Khurana had alleged that the couple are not married anymore. Presenting evidence to support their argument, the lawyers clarified in their statement that they produced divorce documents of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Aaliya Siddiqui aka Zainab. Following this, the court dismissed two pleas. In their statement, the lawyers also alleged how the marriage documents were presented to the court but their divorce documents were concealed. Talking about Aaliya Siddiqui, after she claimed that she and her kids were being tortured by Nawaz’s parents in their house, she had taken to social media to post videos of how there were security guards in her residence. In the video, Aaliya aka Zainab had shared how these guards refused her access to basic places like bathroom and toilet as she and her kids, were allegedly, allowed to use only the living room. As for the case, Aaliya had registered the case at Versova police station against Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his family by filing an FIR against them under sections 498A, 509, and others of IPC on the grounds of dowry harassment and protection of women’s rights. This came after Aaliya was allegedly accused of trespassing by Siddqui’s family. Karisma Kapoor on Brown bagging a spot at Berlin Film Festival; says, “The honour is that Brown is the only Indian show in Series Market Select at Berlin”

Brown, Karisma Kapoor's latest show, has already garnered a following at the Berlin Film Festival before it ever airs. It is a dark and gritty investigative thriller. In a recent interview, the actress spoke about her character in Brown. She suffers from alcoholism and has been severely beaten by life. Curiously, because the story is set in Kolkata, Karisma had to learn Bengali for her part. Not only that, but the actress also had to learn how to roll a joint because her character is a chain smoker. In an interview, when Karisma revealed what compelled her to sign up for Brown. She told ETimes, “When I heard the script for Brown I was wowed. The character of Rita Brown is so different, she's so raw and human. The story touches upon certain topics which are not normally danced with or put forth. I remember my first reaction was, 'Should I do this?' After the narration and experiencing the insistence of Abhinay Deo (director) and the entire team of producers at Zee Studios, I decided to take up the challenge of being Rita Brown. It was a wonderful experience.” Karisma’s character in Brown was that of a chain smoker and an alcoholic. Hence, the actress had to learn to roll a joint. When asked whether it was similar to having a culture shock after getting acquainted with her character in the show, she said, “I wouldn't call it a culture shock, but these are definitely not things that I normally do. I was not in my comfort zone in that sense. But then that is what the challenge of being an actor is, right? And you always want to push yourself. I always want to take myself to the next creative level. Being Rita Brown was an extremely interesting experience and I think a creatively satisfying one at that.” She further added that every show demanded a lot of hard work. “Hard work here was to the point of very nuanced hard work, whether it was on the character, locations, on the script level, on every level of making the show,” she said. Brown had got selected for the Berlinale Series Market Select. Karisma Said, “The honour is that Brown is the only Indian show in Series Market Select at Berlin. It feels very humbling and exciting at the same time. The real victory is that all the hard work that we put into the show is getting noticed. And not just here in India, but on an international platform. It's also encouraging to know that our show has brought an all-new perspective to Indian content on a global stage. The kind of themes and topics that the show highlights are different. And the story tells you its fine to deal with all that stuff.” Brown is a dark and gritty investigative thriller. When the actress was asked what makes it so different, she said, “It is not just a regular crime drama. It is also a human drama. It's a show about human emotions. It's about certain topics that we don't bring to light or put forth too often. I think it's an inspirational story. I would call Rita Brown an inspiration to women around the world. You can be beat up, you can go through certain things, but there is always a way out.” Karisma’s character in the series is an Anglo-Indian character who is a cop. When asked how did she react to the character that was offered to her and how was her experience while playing the role, she said, “Yeah, that was very interesting. We did a lot of work to get that side of the character right. I saw a lot of footage, I had to read about it. We had a lot of workshops with Helen aunty and Soni (Razdan) aunty. It was a lot of fun playing an Anglo-Indian character.” Further when she was asked if the show was designed in a way that it would appeal not just Indian audience but to international viewers too, she said, “I don't know. I never thought about that, actually. I never looked at it that way. I don't think it was intentional. I think maybe Abhinay just tweaked the tone of his show in such a way that it has reached an international audience. The idea was always to make something different, a bit out of the ordinary. I don't think we set out to make something that must reach an international audience. It was set out to just be something out of the ordinary.” In the show, Karisma’s character Rita looked jaded. However, she was put in a corner and she had to push through. Comparing Karisma’s character reel life character to her real life, the actress was asked how did she relate to this and whether she could recall a similar situation in her real life where she had to fight back. She said, “That was the most interesting part for me. You don't really see these things with your average Indian female protagonist. Sometimes our characters are made to be superhuman. On the contrary, with Rita we get to see someone who is so beat up and so down and out. I just feel that going through a life journey, you see people, you see things happen in your life and other people's lives. And these are real human emotions that you experience. I think that's what touched me about Rita Brown, that she was so real and raw. Her thought process and her body language is not that of a typical heroine or a typical Indian character. She has not been portrayed as a typical woman. She is totally different.” Brown also stars Helen, KK Raina and Jishu Sen alongside Karisma, Surya Sharma and Soni Razdan and shall be one of the first series to follow a police procedural in an emotionally twistful manner. She said that she had developed a good friendship with Janhvi Kapoor who was yet to debut in movies and that Sridevi was guiding her throughout the process of filming the movie. Interestingly, it was also the first movie she worked on. “It was kind of unbelievable for me, sitting in front of her, acting, giving dialogues and stuff like that. You can simply forget everything after simply looking at her. I think an indication of a good actor is that it is important for them to be a good human too. Sometimes you get intimidated seeing actors and they understand that the other person is kind of scared and intimidated. But, if you know, the first thing a good person, a good actor will do is make the other person comfortable. She was that kind of actor. She had a lot of empathy and kindness towards me.” Recalling the scene where she wears a red dress in Mom, she continued, “I got ready and she said ‘Oh, get some curls done to your hair’. She was acting like a mother to me although she was simply a co-star and if she didn’t say anything, it wouldn’t have made much difference. But, just the fact that she actually cared about how I looked and how I can look better, won my heart completely.” Furthermore, when asked about her equation with Janhvi Kapoor, who accompanied Sridevi to the sets of Mom during the shoots, Sajal Ali said that they had become close. The actors had met each other after several years at Filmfare Middle East 2022 award show and the video of the two of them hugging each other had gone viral. She said, “We met after six years after my mother and her mother passed away. Probably because of our mothers as well, we sort of became quite close. I connect with her and she does the same. We used to keep in touch but obviously, she started her career as well and got busy.” Sajal Ali is busy promoting What’s Love Got To Do With It? Ranbir Kapoor explains the exact feeling he felt after his daughter Raha was born: ‘It opened a different emotion’

Amid this, he has wrapped his forthcoming project Animal, helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The makers hosted a wrap party on Tuesday and saw Ranbir set the dance floor on fire with his slick, smooth moves. The songs included Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’, from Dil Se, Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ from Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and ‘Dilliwali Girlfriend’ from his movie, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. In videos which have gone viral on social media, Ranbir Kapoor joined the crew of Animal as he did the hook steps of the songs. Ranbir was also seen channeling Hrithik Roshan as he danced to ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’, which fans loved a lot. 10 Years of Kai Po Che EXCLUSIVE: Amrita Puri gets nostalgic recalling the Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao, Amit Sadh starrer

Bollywood is known for its love stories. But we have also had a lot of films based on love between friends, right from Sholay to Dil Chahta Hai to 3 Idiots. In 2013, a film on the same relation arrived in the form of Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che. Apart from being successful, it also managed to stand apart from other mainstream films on friendship purely because of its rooted storyline and much more realistic approach.   Based on author Chetan Bhagat’s book ‘The 3 Mistakes Of My Life’, Kai Po Che saw Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh play three friends growing up in Ahmedabad during the early 2000s and their coming of age through some serious events that took place back then. Amrita Puri led the female cast of the film as she played Sushant’s sister and Rajkummar’s love interest. As Kai Po Che completes 10 years today, the actress looked back at the making of the film in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama. Amrita said that she is proud to be a part of a film that is iconic, still talked about and loved. The actress was relatively new 10 years ago. Her casting happened unplanned as she met Abhishek Kapoor at a party and got talking. “He asked ‘What do you do?’ He didn’t know that I am an actor. Then I told him that I am an actor. So, he thought of me for the role of Vidya Bhatt and asked me to audition,” she said. She auditioned with Mukesh Chhabra and a month or two later she was told that she has bagged the role. Although Kai Po Che has quite a few dramatic twists, it stayed away from melodrama. This was also seen in the subtle performances of the cast. Amrita told us that they achieved this through workshops with Mukesh Chhabra. “We did character development and script reading with Gattu (Kapoor) and the rest of the cast,” she said. “He said that he wanted my character to be cute and sweet but at the same time flirtatious. He said those scenes need to be like kachcha kairi (raw mango). All this really helps you get into your character.” One of the biggest challenges for Amrita was her diction since her character was from Ahmedabad. “I had to work a lot on my diction with a diction coach because I am from Bombay; I am urban and so is my accent. There was some Gujarati (in the dialogues). The pol in Ahmedabad is very old school. It should look like I am from there,” she said. The other challenge was the scorching heat of the summer. In fact, she revealed that Sushant once got a heat stroke and later on, almost everyone faced issues related to the heat. As Amrita played Rajkummar’s love interest, the two had to shoot together on quite a few occasions. “At that time, he (Rajkummar) wasn’t a known name as he was relatively new,” she said. “He was very honest, sincere and hardworking. But he also wants his co-star to shine as an actor. We would work on the scene and dialogues.” She also had a good time shooting with Sushant and Amit. “All of us were quite new back then and very excited. When you are new, you are also naïve and fresh and there is that idealism as well; you haven’t seen the world yet. We got along very well. Each of us wanted to prove ourselves,” she said. Kai Po Che was the Bollywood debut for Sushant Singh Rajput. But he was already popular because of his hit TV show Pavitra Rishta. Apart from playing Amrita’s brother on screen, SSR also played his scooty coach off screen. “I didn’t know how to ride a scooty; I still don’t know much,” said Amrita. “But I had to ride it because girls in Gujarat and Ahmedabad do that. So, Sushant became my scooty coach. We used to ride around Aaram Nagar (in Mumbai). Everyone used to recognize him and run after the scooty. At times, I couldn’t ride properly as they used to surround us to see him. So, we had a lot of fun memories like that.” Looking back at Kai Po Che after a decade Amrita feels emotional. “It’s very nostalgic,” she said. “At that time, we didn’t even know that it will be such a big hit. You don’t realize when you are shooting and that that time won’t come back. Now Sushant is no more, so it’s very sentimental and nostalgic. I always get emotional when I am talking about it. When I think of Kai Po Che, I feel a lot of love for everybody who was involved. All the actors and crew. It was like a family unit.” Talking about her forthcoming projects, Amrita will be seen in the web film Neeyat.
