Priyanka Chopra says people cautioned her for Fashion: “Ladkiyan female-oriented films career ke end mein karti hai”

Priyanka Chopra arrived in India over the weekend for the opening ceremony of the Jio MAMI Film Festival 2023. On Sunday, she was a part of a masterclass alongside Bhumi Pednekar where she talked about her film Fashion which gave her a huge boost in her career. However, she was told not to do female female-oriented projects at the time.

Priyanka Chopra said, "Before Krrish and Aitraaz, it was always there, ‘Oh my God, what's the next (movie) one I'm going to do? What is the opportunity that is going to come to me?’ I picked from what came to me. After Aitraaz and Krrish, I had done work which gave me a solid foundation. I got critical acclaim. I had people telling me ‘I know my job’, even though I didn't know I knew my job. That is when I started seeking work that would challenge me.”

She added, “I took the decision of signing Fashion right after Krrish, and at that time I was told, ‘Ladkiyan (leading actress) female-oriented films career ke end mein karti hai, National Award ke liye. You have just done Krrish, Aitraaz, female-oriented films kyun kar rahe ho?’ Uss zamane mein itna hota bhi nahi tha (Girls do female-oriented films at the end of their career, for National Award. You have just done Krrish, Aitraaz, female-oriented films, why are you doing this?' This did not even happen in those times).”

She said that she had loved Madhur Bhandarkar’s vision and the script. She called it a ‘passion project’ which went on to become a huge part of her career and won her a National Award.

Priyanka Chopra once did three auditions for a movie; says ego is the end of everything: “Don't let your pride stand in front of you”

Priyanka Chopra arrived in India over the weekend for the opening ceremony of the Jio MAMI Film Festival 2023. On Sunday, she was a part of a masterclass alongside Bhumi Pednekar where she talked about auditioning for movie parts. She said that she has no qualms in auditioning but there have been fights where she had to ‘fight and audition for them’.

While she did not name the project, Priyanka Chopra said that she once liked a script and had to tell her agents to call up the filmmakers for her to audition. She did three auditions for the film and it started with her meeting the filmmakers. As reported by Etimes, she said, “There are times where a movie which I pursue, there are different scenarios. When a script has come to me for my consideration, I will read it for just my character first and to see if the story is interesting. If it is hard to read the script, even if your character is amazing, then I sit with the filmmakers on why it was a hard read. Every wall you hit, you have to solve that first.”

She added, “There was a particular film that I read about and I really wanted to be a part of. I got my agents to call the filmmakers and offer myself to audition for the movie. I had to do 3 auditions, first was a meeting with the filmmakers, second he came over to my house and did a reading and then the third time we went to the studio and I got the part.”

Priyanka added that her pride does not stand in between her dreams. She said that ego is ‘the end of everything’. She said, “I am not afraid of pursuing my dreams and my pride doesn't stand in front of my dreams ever. If you want something, don't let your pride stand in front of you. Ego is the end of everything, hard work, humility and persistence is all you need to be successful in any field. Come from a place of no pride, come from a team, wanting to help others rise instead of wanting to pull others down. Because you are insecure about something and in that feeling, we pull others down. Try to be a leader in your field and you don't have to be on top of your game for that. You have to be an everyday leader, in smaller environments, for your family, for your colleagues. The world needs everyday leaders and that requires having humility, persistence and a sense of hard work.”

Indi(r)a’s Emergency: Vikramaditya Motwane hints at Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency when asked why he made a documentary on the subject; Anurag Kashyap remarks “You have the b***s to make it”

The world premiere of Vikramaditya Motwane’s powerful documentary, Indi(r)a’s Emergency, was held at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023 on Saturday, October 28 in Mumbai. A Q-and-A session was held after the screening which was attended by Vikramaditya Motwane and producer Sameer Nair. Anurag Kashyap also joined in to talk a bit about the film and later passed on the microphone to members of the audience who wanted to ask a question! The session was moderated by Varun Grover.

Varun asked Vikramaditya why he chose to make a documentary on the Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi and not a feature. The filmmaker hinted at Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, based on the same subject, as he said, “The feature film is being made by somebody else!”

He added, “Samir Patil (of Scroll) approached me. I am a history buff. I studied history in college. This was supposed to be a series of 3 episodes.” He continued, “We realized that this was a great way to tell our recent history to an entire audience that has some idea but not a complete idea.”

Unlike documentaries that have interviews, Indi(r)a’s Emergency stands out. Vikramaditya Motwane explained, “I was clear that I didn’t want to do a typical documentary, with intervals et al. We decided to go with archival footage. We managed to find incredible footage from Getty, Pathe etc. Thankfully, Mr Sameer Nair stepped in and saw the rough cut. He decided to come on board.”

Anurag Kashyap pitched in, “I saw the three-hour version and was blown away by it. I told Motwane, ‘You have the b***s to make it’ and then you (pointing to Sameer Nair) have bigger b***s to rescue it. Hence, compliments to both of you (laughs)!”

Sameer Nair talked about when this film can be seen by more people. He began by saying, “We are submitting for censor as well.” As expected, the audience broke into laughter because the film also talks about censorship.

Sameer, on a serious note, added, “We would like to have a version that we can release theatrically as well. It’s important to tell us stories like this. And the way it’s done with the footage, animation, voiceover and writing, it is entertaining.”

Anurag Kashyap remarked, “It is entertaining and it’s also very powerful. It says a lot more than just the Emergency.”

Vikramaditya Motwane honestly admitted that his other project took priority over Indi(r)a’s Emergency and hence, the documentary took a while to be out. He didn’t name this project but he was probably referring to his acclaimed Amazon Prime Video show, Jubilee. He said, “We started working on it in early 2020. Sameer came on board in late 2021. Meanwhile, I shot something else and came back. In a way, it was like my step-child!”

Meanwhile, Raj Kundra is embarking on a new journey as he prepares for his acting debut in the film UT 69. The movie is based on his experiences during his time in jail in connection to a 2021 pornography case. Raj, who was the prime accused in the case, spent time behind bars before being released on bail.

Tejas Movie Review: TEJAS suffers due to a lack of logic and too many cinematic liberties.

TEJAS is the story of a brave officer. Tejas Gill (Kangana Ranaut) is a wing commander in the Indian Air Force. She and her colleague Arfa (Anshul Chauhan) are about to get suspended after they save an officer Vivek (Kashyap Shangari) from a prohibited area in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Vivek is thankful to Tejas and asks her out for a date. Tejas agrees but is still under the trauma of losing her parents and boyfriend Ekveer (Varun Mitra) during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. One day, news comes in that an engineer named Shikhar Ali has been captured by terrorists in Pakistan. They ask for Kashmir in return for his release. Videos of Shikhar being nabbed are viral on the internet. Tejas sees his videos and realizes that he’s none other than her batchmate, Prashant (Vishak Nair). She also realizes that he has used Morse code to send his location, which is Mir Ali. Tejas informs about it to the IAF chief R K Panicker (Ashish Vidyarthi). She also requests him to allow her to go to Pakistan and rescue Prashant. Panicker agrees. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Sarvesh Mewara's story has all the trappings of a blockbuster. Sarvesh Mewara's screenplay, however, is silly. The narrative is riddled with scenes of convenience and also gives a deja vu of films DUS [2005], CAPTAIN PHILLIPS [2013], MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, TOP GUN: MAVERICK [2022] etc. Sarvesh Mewara's dialogues are just fine.

Sarvesh Mewara's direction is not upto the mark. To give credit where it's due, some scenes are well executed like the sequence of the tribals and the 26/11 attack. He also packs in a lot in 118 minutes.

Sadly, the minuses outweigh the plusses. The film defies logic and how. After a rocking intro scene, the film falls when it’s shown that Tejas is the only one in her class to know about the Tejas aircraft. But the fact is that any IAF aspirant would know these basic details. Later, Tejas is the only one among all the defence officials in the country to guess that Prashant has used Morse code to send his location. When Tejas tells her senior that she wishes to go to Pakistan, we assume that the latter will have some hesitation. Instead, the senior officer straight away agrees as if infiltrating into Pakistan is akin to a cakewalk! Then the manner in which Tejas hides the aircrafts at the Pakistani airport is a smart idea but looks childish on screen.

Kangana Ranaut delivers a fine performance but looks quite stiff in scenes where she’s supposed to look rough and tough. Anshul Chauhan lends able support and also raises laughs. Ashish Vidyarthi is dependable. Varun Mitra is lovely while Kashyap Shangari gets no scope. Sunit Tandon (Academy teacher) leaves a mark. Vishak Nair is okay. Rohed Khan (Sarqalam), Rio Kapadia (RAW Chief) and Mohan Agashe (Prime Minister) do well. Mushtaq Kak (Khatooni) hams.

Shashwat Sachdev's music fails to register. 'Jaan Da' and 'Aag Udi' are the best of the lot while the rest of the songs like 'Dil Hai Ranjhana', 'Reh Jao Na' and 'Ishq Hai Ranjhe Da' are forgettable. Shashwat Sachdev's background score is uplifting.

Hari K Vedantam's cinematography is appropriate. Harpal Singh Barda, Vikram Dahiya and Amin Khatib's action is entertaining. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design is passable. Rohit Chaturvedi's costumes are realistic. After Studios and Creative Doctor's VFX is tacky and very poor. Aarif Sheikh's editing is fine though it could have been crisper.

On the whole, TEJAS suffers due to a lack of logic and too many cinematic liberties. At the box office, it is likely to meet with a disastrous fate as there is hardly any buzz or excitement around the movie.

Ranveer Singh on facing three back-to-back flops; says he can’t beat himself over Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus: “I had a limited contribution and responsibility”

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh graced the first episode of Koffee With Karan season 8 with his star wife Deepika Padukone. The actors discussed their careers, their 11-year relationship, marriage, mental health and more. During the same conversation, Ranveer talked about how he went through a lot after Cirkus flopped. He also said that he had not seen three major flops in a row which affected him.

Ranveer said, “I went through a lot, especially after Cirkus. Coming out of the pandemic, we had this beautiful film 83. It was just released at the wrong time. Jayeshbhai Jordaar was again a lovely well-intentioned film, which again ultimately found its audience on streaming. Cirkus I had a limited contribution and limited responsibility. So I can’t really beat myself over it.”

The actor continued, “Having said that, I had not seen three major flops in a row. So it was new to me. I was not good. But then I came to terms with everything that was happening around me. After everything that has happened, I have come out of it with more gratitude than ever before.”

On the work front, Ranveer will be headline Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3. Originally, the character was played by Amitabh Bachchan followed by Shah Rukh Khan in Akhtar’s two installments. The project is slated for 2025. He has reportedly signed Baiju Bawra, helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Koffee With Karan 8: Ranveer Singh convinced Sanjay Leela Bhansali to cast Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela: "Kareena had to exit..."

The beloved couch is back with Karan Johar as Hotstar Specials’ Koffee with Karan returns for season 8. The first episode couldn’t get any better as star-couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh come together for the first time ever on the Koffee couch, spilling the beans on their marriage, proposal and more. On Koffee with Karan’s infamous couch, Ranveer Singh shared his experience of meeting his real-life heroine and how he convinced Sanjay Leela Bhansali to cast Deepika in Ram Leela after Kareena Kapoor Khan had exited due to some unforeseen circumstances.

“Ram-Leela was supposed to happen with myself and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The set was ready. One week before roll, for some reason, Kareena had to exit the film,” Ranveer told Karan on the premiere episode.

He suggested Deepika's name as he had just watched Cocktail. “Then we were sitting and wondering who to cast. And Cocktail had just happened (released). So there was a discussion with Mr Bhansali, all the ADs and myself in the office, about who should we take. And I was batting for team Deepika, because I just saw Cocktail, and she got cast,” he said.

Talking about the script reading session and how he met Deepika, he recalled,  “There was a famous or infamous reading for Ram Leela at Mr. Bhansali’s house in Versova. I was supposed to meet him before Deepika’s arrival. So I was sitting on the table and the door was on my left. He has these heavy doors and he lives by the seaside. So, these heavy doors open and the gush of wind comes from the sea. There, Deepika enters wearing this white chikankari, hair blowing due to the sea wind just like some sadgi ki moorat. Ranbir Kapoor says he has Raha all for himself as Alia Bhatt is shooting for Jigra: “She is trying to speak words like Pa and Ma”

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor may not be on social media officially but he often interacts with his fans. The actor recently held a Zoom call conversation with a bunch of his fans where he talked on several topics including being a father. The actor along with his actress-wife Alia Bhatt welcomed their first child Raha in November, last year. Ranbir said that he is getting a lot of time with Raha now as Alia is busy shooting for Jigra.

In a conversation with his fans over a Zoom call, Ranbir revealed that he hasn’t signed any project since the wrap of Animal as he is spending time with his daughter. He said, “Life is great. I have taken a long break. I am going to be home only. I will be home for five-six months. This was always my plan because when Raha was born, I was shooting for Animal, and I couldn’t give her time. I wanted to take a paternity leave, and I got it at the right time because she is so expressive now. She is crawling. She is recognising. She is giving so much love, and she is trying to speak words like Pa and Ma. It’s a beautiful time to be around her, and I am going to cherish this forever.”

He added, “Alia is busy with the shooting for Vasan Bala’s Jigra, and that means I get Raha all for myself. Raha is going to turn one soon, and we will have a small birthday party with friends and family. Looking forward to that.”

Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest Day 2 EXCLUSIVE: Khushi Kapoor recalls ‘bawling’ after she got a call for The Archies: “It was truly such a special moment”

Netflix's The Archies released its first song 'Sunoh,' featuring Dot (Aditi), Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, Mihir Ahuja, Suhana Khan, Vedang Raina and Yuvraj Menda, at Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest Day 2 on October 19, 2023. At the exclusive launch, Khushi Kapoor recalled what it was like getting a call for her debut movie.

Speaking on stage, Khushi Kapoor said that it was a dream come true for her to be cast in The Archies.  Recalling being cast in the Zoya Akhtar directorial, she said, “When I got the call from Zoya saying that I’ve been chosen for the film, I was with a friend. And as soon as I cut the call, she gave me a tight hug, and I started bawling, crying because it was truly such a special moment.”

Talking about sharing a great bond with her co-stars, she added, “We have all been there for each other from the beginning, and we all have individual relationships. It felt like one big school trip, where we were going to each other’s rooms, making Maggi and popcorn. I felt really lucky to have true friends through the process.”

Khushi Kapoor recalled taking several lessons for swimming, skating, cycling and acting for The Archies. She said, “We have a lot of our character’s personalities in ourselves. It was great to work with Zoya and find those different layers of the characters. We did train a lot. We had swimming, cycling, skating, and acting workshops so we could get comfortable with our characters and ourselves. By the time we got to the shoot, we were extremely well prepared.”

This live-action musical transports viewers on an enchanting journey back to the captivating era of the 1960s, set in the fictional hill town of Riverdale. The film is produced by Netflix India, Tiger Baby, Archie Comics and Graphic India.

The Archies will be released worldwide on Netflix only on December 7, 2023.

Sunny Leone reveals the reason behind her name change; says, “It was as if a switch had been flipped within me”

Sunny Leone is one of the most recognized faces in the world. After being an adult entertainer, she moved to India to be a contestant on Bigg Boss. Soon enough, she grabbed her Bollywood debut in the form of Pooja Bhatt’s Jism 2 (2014), which also starred Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh. There was no looking behind from here on as long as her popularity is concerned.

But not many would know that Sunny Leone’s real name is Karenjit Kaur Vohra and there is a story on how she became Sunny Leone. She hails from Punjab, India, from where her father migrated to Canada. Her life went through a change after she became a model. She shared her life story in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan India Magazine.

Sunny said, “I’ve previously mentioned that my academic journey was far from stellar, and while enrolling in college was a necessary step, it wasn’t one I completed. During my time on campus, a chance encounter with a fellow student introduced me to a modelling agent, and it was as if a switch had been flipped within me.”

The actress added, “In that moment, I realised that modelling was a business, and if I approached it intelligently – steering clear of its darker aspects – I could truly thrive. I understood that my success of failure rested solely on my shoulders. And so, the persona of Sunny Leone was born.”

On the work front, Sunny will next be seen in Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy. The crime-cum-political drama will see her cast opposite Rahul Bhat.

Back in September 2022, Bollywood Hungama reported that Kartik Aaryan had signed Aashiqui 3 with director Anurag Basu. Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt are all set to reignite the magic of love story and music with the much anticipated third installment of the hit Aashiqui franchise. The Archies is a coming-of-age musical following the lives of the town’s favourite set of teenagers by filmmaker Zoya Akhtar. ‘Sunoh,' is a song created by the ingenious duo of Ankur Tewari and The Islanders, lyrically woven by the maestro Javed Akhtar and the young and talented Dot, harmoniously performed by Tejas Menon and Shivam Mahadevan. ‘Sunoh’ helps viewers to immerse into the exciting world of 'The Archies,' introducing the characters of the film.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar said, "Writing 'Sunoh' was like unlocking a time capsule of the 1960s' rock and roll era. It's a musical experience that bridges the past and present, celebrating the enduring essence of this iconic period through melody and lyrics. Entering the world of Netflix’s The Archies makes us revisit our childhood and comic books and so much more

The Archies is set in a magical world inspired by the comic books we grew up with. It’s fresh and exciting and Netflix has only just scratched the surface with the first song, ‘Sunoh’ from the film. The movie is set in the 1960s in a picturesque hill station called Riverdale, tells the story of a group of Anglo-Indian teenagers and is directed by Zoya Akhtar.

The Archies is an adaptation of the globally famous Archie Comics IP. Through this film, the audience will get to enter the world of the comics.

The first song of The Archies called ‘Sunoh’ was launched at the Bollywood Hungama OTT Fest. Apart from filmmakers Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, the event was also graced by the ensemble cast of the film including Agastya Nanda, Dot (Aditi Saigal), Khushi Kapoor, Mihir Ahuja, Suhana Khan, Yuvraj Menda and Vedang Raina.

Riverdale, which was seen in the song, is right out of a dream and an absolute pleasure to the eyes could well be like Shimla, Ooty, Mccluskieganj and Landour of the 1960s.

‘Sunoh’ sees Suhana Khan effortlessly display her skating skills. During the launch of the song, she spoke about the training she and others went through before the film went on floors. “We started training 5 or 6 months before we actually started filming. I know you said it (skating scenes) looks very breezy in the song, but I'm lucky you didn't see us fall and bump into each other, that was far from effortless. But yeah, it was a lot of fun. I loved every moment of it, even all the falling. I fell a lot, but I didn’t hurt myself luckily,” she said.

Agastya plays a music aficionado in the film. Sharing about his preparations, he added, “I had to learn how to play the guitar. I had to learn how to sing. Learning to sing and how to play the guitar was a great learning experience. It isn’t easy. Piano is a problem as I have thick fingers. So, I keep hitting two or three notes at the same time. But the guitar is fun and adds to the fun at the parties if you play it with your friends.”

The Archies is all set to stream on Netflix from December 7.

Ganapath – A Hero Is Born Movie Review: On the whole, GANAPATH – A HERO IS BORN fails to impress.

GANAPATH – A HERO IS BORN is the story of a man who is meant for greatness. The year is 2070. Due to a major war, the poor have become poorer. They live in a settlement where the rich control the food and water supply. The rich, meanwhile, reside in the luxurious Silver City. A mysterious man named Dalini rules this territory. His trusted aide, John (Ziad Baki), conducts boxing matches and earns money through the bets placed by the uber-rich. Guddu (Tiger Shroff) works for John along with his uncle Kaizad (Jameel Khan) and Senior (Girish Kulkarni). The latter detests Guddu. One day, John asks Guddu to take his girlfriend Rosie (Elli AvrRam) out to a nightclub while he’s busy in a meeting. Rosie gets physical with Guddu. John catches them red-handed and buries them alive. Miraculously, Guddu survives. Kaizad asks him to move away to a settlement of poor people up in the hills and meet Shiva (Rahman). Once he meets Shiva, Guddu is supposed to tell him ‘Ganapath is here’. Guddu does as instructed. He meets Shiva and his close confidante, Jassi (Kriti Sanon). Shiva is blind while Jassi is tough and fights quite well. Unknown to Guddu, he is Ganapath or the saviour of the poor, as predicted by a revered man (Amitabh Bachchan). But while Guddu is good at analysing fighters and their strengths and weaknesses, he’s not a fighter himself. Shiva and Jassi decide to train him. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Vikas Bahl's story is clichéd and gives a déjà vu of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA [2009]. Vikas Bahl's screenplay is unexciting. A few scenes are well thought of but they give a been-there-done-that feeling. Vikas Bahl's dialogues are just fine.

Vikas Bahl's direction is not up to the mark. To give credit its due, he has handled a few dramatic moments well. Guddu’s transformation also makes for a nice watch. The fight at the intermission point is worth it. The lead actors have also been presented stylishly.

Sadly, the film is riddled with shortcomings. The futuristic element could have been the USP but the makers fail to do justice to it. The poor VFX further messes things up in this regard. For a film about one man fighting the system, it’s mandatory that the audience should be moved by the plight of the have-nots and be wowed by the protagonist’s heroism. Both these factors are missing. Moreover, the twist in the climax is very predictable. One can guess it from a mile away.

Speaking of performances, Tiger Shroff has never looked so dashing. His performance is quite good. Kriti Sanon gives a sizzling performance. She looks convincing while doing action. Amitabh Bachchan is hardly there and is fine. Ziad Baki is decent. Jameel Khan and Girish Kulkarni are dependable. Rahman is the surprise of the film. Elli AvrRam looks hot but is wasted. Jess Liaudin (Tabahi) is over the top. Shruthy Menon (Shaina) is fine.

Songs are well-woven into the narrative. 'Sara Zamana' manages to register to an extent followed by 'Jai Ganesha', 'Hum Aaye Hain', 'Lafda Kar De' and 'Time 2 Shine'. Salim-Sulaiman's background score is passable.

Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti's cinematography is neat. Amit Ray & Subrata Chakrobarty's production design is unimaginative. Aki Narula, Sukriti Grover and Akangshe Chopra's costumes are quite cool, especially the ones worn by Tiger and Kriti. Tim Man and Vikram Dahiya's action is entertaining and not at all gory. After Studio, Number 9 VFX and Maadfam Studios' VFX is tacky. Ritesh Soni's editing is appropriate.

On the whole, GANAPATH – A HERO IS BORN fails to impress due to a clichéd storyline, poor VFX and predictable second half. At the box office, the limited buzz and huge costs will prove detrimental.

Yaariyan 2 Movie Review: On the whole, YAARIYAN 2 is a decent entertainer.

YAARIYAN 2 is the story of three cousins. Laadli Chibber (Divya Khosla Kumar) lives in Shimla with her mother (Lillete Dubey). She was suffering from thalassemia but has now recovered. Laadli wanted to fall in love and then get married. Her mother, however, asks her to meet Abhay Singh Katyal (Yash Das Gupta). Both click and they decide to get married. Laadli immediately calls Shikhar (Meezaan Jafri) and Bajrang Das Khatri aka Bajju (Pearl V Puri), her cousins who are closest to her, for her wedding. After marriage, Laadli moves to Mumbai with Abhay. Bajju, too, works in Mumbai. Shikhar is forced to shift to Mumbai and work as a delivery boy after he faces a roadblock in his biking career. Laadli faces trouble in marriage as Abhay seems indifferent to her. Shikhar changes his SIM card and gets hounded with calls from Ikroor (Anaswara Rajan). He meets her and both fall in love. Bajju, meanwhile, begins a relationship with Shona (Warina Hussain). Shikhar, however, has reservations about Shona and her behaviour. This causes a rift between the trio. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

YAARIYAN 2 is based on BANGALORE DAYS [2014] and the story is promising. We have seen films about siblings and friends. A film about cousins is rare. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's screenplay flows well and is replete with some nice dramatic and emotional sequences. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's dialogues are youthful and modern. However, the dialogue about nappies is repeated far too many times.

Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's direction is creative. The director duo is known for adding a lot even to their ordinary shots. This trademark stamp is visible from start to finish. While they handle all tracks well, the track of the dead girl's parents is very moving. The race sequence, meanwhile, is gripping.

On the flipside, there's hardly any comedy. For a film about friendship, there should have been more humour. The character of Bajji gets a raw deal in the second half as he is hardly there. Moreover, at 150 minutes, the film is too lengthy.

Speaking of performances, Divya Khosla Kumar looks charming and performs the difficult role with ease. Meezaan Jafri shows a marked improvement compared to his work in HUNGAMA 2 [2021]. Pearl V Puri is decent but could have been better. Yash Das Gupta emerges as the best performer in the film. Warina Hussain looks stunning but could have done better in some difficult scenes. Bhagyashri Borse (Raajlaxmi) looks stunning and leaves a mark. Anaswara Rajan is lovely but goes over the top in emotional scenes. Priya Prakash Warrier is wasted. Murli Sharma is dependable. Lillete Dubey hams.

The songs are decent though it's in no way close to the hit soundtrack of YAARIYAN [2014]. 'Saure Ghar' is the best followed by 'Simroon Tera Naam', 'Oonchi Oonchi Deewarein', 'Suit Patiala', 'Heer Bhi Roye', 'Peene De' and 'Bewafaa Tu'. 'Sunny Sunny 2.0' and 'Blue Hai Paani Paani' are just okay. JAM8's background score is functional.

C R Ravi Yadav's cinematography is stunning. Mumbai has never been captured like this before. Shankar Samanta's production design is rich. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's costumes are glamorous, especially the ones worn by Raajlaxmi. Allan Amin's action is fine. Abhishek Kumar Singh's editing is weak. The film should have been shorter by 15-20 minutes.

On the whole, YAARIYAN 2 is a decent entertainer.

Dhak Dhak Movie Review: DHAK DHAK is a well-intentioned genuine effort laced with some fine performances.

DHAK DHAK is the story of four women bikers. Sky (Fatima Sana Shaikh) is a vlogger specializing in bikes. She breaks up with her boyfriend Shrey (Nishank Verma) after her nude pictures are leaked from his phone. She wants to bag a contract to film the Barcelona Auto Expo. The person in charge, Nishant Kakkar (Hrriday Malhotra), agrees but on one condition - she should create a video series that will emotionally move people. This is when she comes across Manpreet Kaur Sethi aka Mahi (Ratna Pathak Shah). She is in her 60s and rides a motorcycle after she wins the two-wheeler in a contest. Mahi tells Sky that it's her dream to ride her bike at Khardung La Pass, the highest motorable road in the world. Sky agrees to take her there knowing that this is the story she wants to tell. When both try to get their bike fixed, they bump into Uzma (Dia Mirza). She comes on board as a mechanic. Then they are joined by Manjari (Sanjana Sanghi), a god-fearing vegetarian from Govardhan who lies to her parents that she's flying to Leh instead of going there by road. All four of them have distinct personalities and the journey is tough and full of obstacles. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Parijat Joshi and Tarun Dudeja's story is brilliant and waiting to be told. Parijat Joshi and Tarun Dudeja's screenplay does partial justice to the plot at hand. The characters are beautifully fleshed out and at the same time, they also raise some important issues. However, things don’t get properly established in the second half. Parijat Joshi and Tarun Dudeja's dialogues (additional dialogues by Anvita Dutt) are simple and some one-liners raise laughs.

Tarun Dudeja's direction is uncomplicated, despite the flashbacks. He begins the film by establishing that the four ladies have embarked on their biking trip. He then depicts their back stories and it makes for an engaging watch. It is not easy for women travelling alone and this aspect is depicted perfectly. At the same time, not everyone tries to take advantage and this is also taken care of by the beautiful truck driver sequence. Sky’s outburst, the reunion in the pre-climax and the finale are also worth watching.

Sadly, the film is not without its share of blemishes. Nothing much happens in the first hour of the post-interval portion. The four ladies spare Moshe (Benedict Garrett) despite his wrongdoing and this is difficult to digest. The same goes for the sequence when Manjari’s parents allow her to continue her journey on a bike, though they are livid with her. A few aspects like Mahi being ignored by her family and her bond with Prabjyot (Harshpal Singh) are not established well. The conclusion of Uzma’s track is too simplistic. Lastly, it is bewildering how no one from the ashram delivers the oxygen cylinder to a hospitalized Mahi. Agreed that Manjari was not in a position to do so but anyone else should have done the needful, especially when it was a life-and-death situation.

All four leading heroines do a fine job. Fatima Sana Shaikh has the maximum screen time and carries off the role with panache and style. Ratna Pathak Shah as always is a pleasure to watch. Dia Mirza is too good and she underplays her part with panache. Sanjana Sanghi goes a bit overboard in some scenes but otherwise, she puts up a fine act. Nishank Verma lends able support. The same goes for Hrriday Malhotra. Harshpal Singh is there only in the beginning and is okay. Dheerendra Dwivedi (Shabbir; Uzma's husband) leaves a mark. Kallirroi Tziafeta (Martha; Manjari’s foreign friend) is lovely while Dr Lakha Lehri (Taran; truck driver) is adorable. Ozgur Kurt (Bernett) is too good. Benedict Garrett is forgettable and hams. Poonam Gurung (Kung Fu Nun) is great, but her track doesn’t have the desired impact.

DHAK DHAK has several songs but only 'Re Banjara' and 'Akhiyan Criminal' get registered. The rest of them like 'Sadke Sadke', 'Woh Tara', 'Safar Pe Chale' and 'Farzi Duniya' are forgettable. Anurag Saika's background score is in sync with the film’s theme.

Sreechith Vijayan Damodar's cinematography is splendid. The locales of the mountain ranges, especially, are captured beautifully. Nilesh Eknath Wagh's production design is realistic. Natasha Vohra's costumes reflect the character’s personalities. The ones worn by Fatima are appealing. Abdul Aziz Khokhar's action is minimal. Manish Sharma's editing is slick.

On the whole, DHAK DHAK is a well-intentioned genuine effort laced with some fine performances by the leading ladies. But due to a weak second half and negligible buzz, the film will suffer at the box office.

When Sunny Deol played a Pakistani Army officer

Sunny Deol has, over the decades, become a specialist in the action genre. He is considered a master when it comes to delivering powerful punches and kicks to the baddies. He has also been someone who has acted in films where a villain or a group of villains are Pakistanis. He acquired this image after the stupendous success of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and continued the same with Indian, Maa Tujhe Salaam, Hero: Love Story Of A Spy, Jaal: The Trap, etc. Just earlier this year, he revived that image with the blockbuster success of Gadar 2.

In other words, Sunny came to be known as Pakistan’s onscreen nemesis. But what if we tell you that after starring in a series of anti-Pakistan films, Sunny went onto play a proud Pakistani Army officer in a movie? Let’s have a look at this lesser-known aspect about him on his 66th birthday, which is today.

Punjabi filmmaker Amitoj Maan came up with his second Hindi film called Kaafila in 2007. The movie was based on the issue of illegal immigrants. It told the story of a group of Indians eager to relocate to England but are unable to get visas due to some reason or the other. As it is very important for them to get to the European country, they decide to become illegal immigrants.

Surprisingly, in this 2 hour 27 minute movie, Sunny Deol makes an entry after almost an hour. Before that, Kaafila focuses on the Indian travellers, including a Sikh gentleman played by Sudesh Berry and others. They manage to contact people who are experts in trafficking humans illegally to foreign lands. As per the plan of the traffickers, the group of Indians enter Russia and from there they are to reach England after passing through a few other countries.

But they meet one obstacle after the another and there comes a time when even their lives are in danger. This is when Sunny Deol walks into the picture and becomes their saviour. He introduces himself as Sameer, an expert in trafficking people to foreign countries. He knows all the tricks on how to hoodwink the authorities of various countries.

And since he is Sunny Deol, he is also an expert fighter who also knows how to use different types of weapons like a walk in the park. Hence, the film has a number of scenes where he either beats up people or shoots the dead, as he helps the group of immigrants enter England.

After a lot of twists and turns (and a few deaths), the group of Indians realize that there is no point in migrating to another country. They are suddenly enlightened on how they can lead good lives even while staying in India. So, Sunny then helps them return to India. For that, they land in Afghanistan and then Pakistan.

Once the Indian ensemble reaches Pakistan, they realize that Sunny is a Pakistani Army officer Sameer Ahmed Khan. He had gone underground due to some reason. He firmly raises the slogan ‘Pakistan Paindabad’ (may Pakistan live forever), but at the same time doesn’t consider any difference between Indians and Pakistanis. In the end, he happily helps the group of Indians return to their homeland.

Kaafila also starred two Pakistani actresses in the form of Sana Nawaz and Sara Loren. The latter was also seen in Bollywood films like Murder 3, Barkhaa, Fraud Saiyyan, etc.

Kaafila also has a funny Border connection. The 1997 JP Dutta movie saw Sunny play an angry Sardar who shouts at Sudesh Berry’s character Mathuradas at a crucial point in the film. In Kaafila, Berry plays a Sardar, who angrily screams at Sunny.

If not anything else, Kaafila helped Mathuradas avenge his decade-old insult.

With less than two months left for the release of Animal, the anticipation is through the roof for the Ranbir Kapoor starrer. Helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film sees Bobby Deol in an antagonist role. Interestingly in the teaser of the movie, viewers got a glimpse of his character for a brief moment towards the end. But theories on the internet say that his character is cannibalistic. So what does Bobby has to say about it?

Talking about Animal at the Jagran Film Festival, Bobby said, “I was really lucky that I got to be a part of Animal, I have loved Sandeep’s work. He is the only director who has made the same film twice and succeeded both the times. I want to do different characters and as I have said before, I want to break my image, get challenged and be very uncomfortable as an actor."

He also talked about the teaser and added, “When I did that shot, I didn’t even see the monitor. We were in a hurry to finish that moment. I saw the shot for the first time when I saw the teaser and I was like, ‘What? This is me!’ I am so glad about the response I have got for this one shot. It just shows that the audience wants to see me in something different. They want to know what I am doing in that shot– I can’t tell you that, but I am definitely eating something.”

Animal boasts talents including Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri, ensuring a visual and emotional treat for all movie enthusiasts.

Imtiaz Ali admits making “mistake” in taking up acting in Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday; says, “Woh mereko zaleel karna chahta hoga”

Imtiaz Ali, widely recognized for his directorial work on films such as Jab We Met, Tamasha, and Rockstar, recently made a candid revelation about his brief but not-so-well-known acting role in Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday. In a recent interview with Lallantop, Imtiaz Ali referred to his decision to act in the film as a “mistake.”

During the conversation, while reflecting on his somewhat reluctant choice to play a role in Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday, Imtiaz Ali confessed, “When we are young, we all make mistakes. One of my mistakes was taking his advice. We spent a lot of time together and even lived in the same building. We were deeply involved in each other's work. I don't know why he suggested that I should play the role of Yakub Memon in Black Friday. I think it was his stubbornness, woh mereko zaleel karna chahta hoga (he wanted to embarrass me). He said to me, ‘Main aapke liye jaan de sakta hoon, aap mere liye role nahi kar sakte? (I can give my life for you, but you can't play a role for me?). He said this with a lot of emotion, probably because he was a struggling actor at the time (laughs). At that time also he was acting.”

Imtiaz Ali also revealed that Anurag suggested he grow out his hair because additional scenes needed to be filmed for the movie. This recommendation led to him keeping long hair, and he humorously noted, “This is why I have long hair now.”

Black Friday marked Anurag Kashyap’s second directorial venture after Paanch, and he was also the film's writer. Inspired by Black Friday: The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts, a book by Hussain Zaidi detailing the 1993 Bombay bombings, the film delves into the events leading up to the bombings and the subsequent police investigation. In 2004, the film faced legal challenges that resulted in its delayed release. After three years of legal battles, it finally premiered in Indian theatres, receiving critical acclaim. The film featured an ensemble cast that included actors Pawan Malhotra, Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Kishor Kadam, and Zakir Hussain in prominent roles.
