Shah Rukh Khan gets into heated debate with Ness Wadia over IPL mega auction plans

In a recent BCCI meeting with franchise owners in Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Ness Wadia, co-owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS), reportedly found themselves at odds. The meeting, aimed at discussing plans for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, quickly turned contentious over the topic of the mega auctions.

KKR’s stance on mega auction

Shah Rukh Khan, whose team KKR lifted the IPL title this year, was vocal about his opposition to the mega auction. KKR had a dominant season, topping the group stage and defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in both the playoffs and the final to clinch their third title. Khan emphasized the importance of retaining key players, arguing that “it takes a lot of time to build” a cohesive and successful squad. He found support from Sunrisers Hyderabad's co-owner, Kavya Maran, who echoed his sentiments during the heated discussion.

PBKS’s perspective

On the other hand, Ness Wadia of PBKS disagreed with the idea of major retentions. The PBKS team had a disappointing season, finishing ninth in the table with only five wins out of 14 matches. Wadia’s perspective added fuel to the debate, leading to a heated exchange with Khan during the meeting.

Franchise owners’ debates

Ahead of the meeting, there were reports that some franchises were pushing for up to eight retentions before the mega auction. Additionally, there were suggestions to reintroduce the Right to Match (RTM) option, which was discontinued in 2022 with the addition of two new teams to the tournament. The meeting also saw discussions about the potential implications for foreign players defaulting on their contracts, a move that could significantly disrupt franchise plans.

While the Ambanis, owners of Mumbai Indians, attended the meeting via video conference, several other prominent franchise owners were present at the BCCI headquarters. These included Kiran Kumar Grandhi of Delhi Capitals, Sanjiv Goenka of Lucknow Super Giants, Rupa Gurunath of Chennai Super Kings, Manoj Badale of Rajasthan Royals, and Prathmesh Mishra of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Shah Rukh Khan attended director Siddharth Anand's birthday party in Mumbai on July 31. According to rumors, he entered quietly through the kitchen with his manager, Pooja Dadlani. The party was held at a posh restaurant in BKC, Mumbai. While SRK attempted to dodge the spotlight, paparazzi stationed outside the eatery were able to capture his images and videos.

SRK wore a basic black t-shirt, dark blue blazer, and blue trousers. He finished the ensemble with sunglasses and a sling bag. He and his manager came in their beautiful Rolls Royce, both sporting ponytails.

Shah Rukh and his family traveled for London last month after attending Annat Ambani and Radhika Merchant's weddings, where they have been spending weeks in preparation for his upcoming film, King, in which he will share screen space with daughter Suhana Khan.

Over the last few weeks, there have been claims that SRK is about to have eye surgery abroad. However, his manager or team have yet to corroborate this.

A source close to the Shah Rukh Khan stated, "There have been allegations of SRK flying to the United States for eye surgery. However, sources close to the actor have not verified any such developments thus yet. His public relations team has not responded to questions about the procedure."

On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan starrer in back-to-back hits like Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. The actor's next film will be The King, directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

Shah Rukh's next King will be directed by Sujoy Ghosh. It's co-produced by his banner Red Chillies Entertainment and Siddharth Anand's Marflix Pictures. The film will also star Abhishek Bachchan as the chief antagonist.

Amjad Khan’s dhobi was the inspiration behind his famous dialogue “Arre O Sambha” from Sholay

July 27 marked the 32nd death anniversary of Amjad Khan, one of the most iconic actors from India cinema. Although he was known for his villainous roles, he also excelled while playing different roles. But he is known the most for his legendary act as the dacoit Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy’s classic Sholay (1975).

Khan’s role as Gabbar Singh is not only still remembered but it also sends a chill down your spine. A major highlight about his performance in Sholay was that he made some of the mundane lines memorable. For example, “Kitne aadmi the?”, “Arre O Sambha”, “Holi kab hai, kab hai Holi?”, etc.

It would come as a complete surprise to many that out of these dialogues, Khan’s inspiration behind the line “Arre O Sambha” was his dhobi (laundry guy). This interesting trivia is disclosed by journalist turned author Roshmila Bhattacharya in her book ‘Bad Men: Bollywood’s Iconic Villains’. The book has numerous chapters based on some of the most iconic onscreen bad men from Hindi cinema. It is published by Rupa Publications.

Amjad Khan’s wife Shehla Khan told the author that her husband used to excel in mimicry of famous people. But Amjad’s father, the late actor Jayant, once told him that he should try and mimic ordinary people.

An excerpt from the book read, “Shehla remembers her father-in-law, actor Jayant, telling his son, ‘Tum khaas ki nakal karoge to pehchane jaaoge, agar nakal hi karni hai to aam ki karo (If you try to imitate a known person, you will be caught. If you have to imitate someone, let it be a common man).’ The words resonated with him, and Amjad Khan found his muses in the people around him, including their domestic worker and the dhobi (laundry man). ‘We had a dhobi who would call out to his wife, “Arrey O Shanti”, and from that was born “Arrey O Sambha”,’ reveals Shehla.”

This chapter from ‘Bad Men’ also looks at the period when Amjad Khan and his wife met with an accident when they were traveling from Mumbai to Goa in their car. Khan had to reach over there to shoot The Great Gambler after he missed his flight as he was shooting for the film Watan (which was later shelved). The veteran actor dozed off as their driver drove the vehicle. Later, when they were about to resume the journey after taking a break for tea at a stall, Khan asked their driver to rest, and he decided to take the wheel.

While he was trying to flip a cassette in the deck while driving, the car lost balance and banged into a tree. Khan broke his leg and 13 ribs while Shehla was also badly injured. Their son, driver and maid were unhurt. Khan and Shehla were rushed to the Panjim Medical Hospital.

An excerpt from the book read, “Amjad was wheeled in for an emergency surgery. ‘Since my right hand was broken, Amit-ji (Amitabh Bachchan), who had rushed over on getting the news, signed the consent forms for the tracheostomy. He must have been so nervous because Amjad’s condition was not good, but both Jaya and Amit-ji were by my side all day, consulting the doctors and making all the arrangements,’ Shehla relives the horror.”

The except continued, “Throughout his stay at the Panjim Medical Hospital, Amjad Khan’s The Great Gambler co-star and good friend, Amitabh Bachchan, would visit the hospital every day, urging him to get well soon. Later, when the actor himself was in hospital for months after being injured on the sets of Coolie (1983), Amjad sat by his bedside and boosted his spirits. Their yaarana (friendship) was real!”

‘Punjabi Munde’ song launch: Raveena Tandon talks about Sanjay Dutt; raises laughs: “The day Ghudchadi trailer was released, I saw a meme which read, ‘Ramika Sen and Adhira in a parallel universe’”

Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Aruna Irani, Khushalii Kumar, Parth Samthaan, singer-composer Sukhbir, choreographer Ganesh Acharya, director Binnoy K Gandhi and producer Nidhi Dutta attended the launch of the song ‘Punjabi Munde’ from Ghudchadi in Mumbai. One of the most memorable moments of the event was Raveena Tandon’s opening speech.

Raveena Tandon began by saying, “Aruna ji ke saamne hum sab paani kam chai hai. She’s the original, original, original ki OG! She has worked with my father (Ravi Tandon) in many films. There was this song ‘Sapna Mera Toot Gaya’ from Khel Khel Mein (1975). It was my favourite song. Caravan (1971) se leke aaj tak caravan chalta hi raha aur chalta rahega!”

She further said, “It’s a huge honour for me as I was working with my favourite director J P Dutta’s daughter (Nidhi Dutta.) I worked in his films like Kshatriya (1993). Now, I am working with my daamaad, Binnoy!”

She continued, “Parth and Khushalii have been fantastic. Sukhbiir, thank you for this wonderful song for our film.”

She then asked “Ganya kahan gaya?”, referring to Ganesh Acharya. The choreographer, however, had to leave due to ill-health. Next, Raveena Tandon asked writer Deepak Kapur Bhardwaj to come forward. She said, “When Deepak and Binnoy narrated the script to me, I had faith in it from the word ‘go’.” She also praised actress Bindiya and called her “My most favourite woman on this planet”.

Raveena Tandon then raised laughs as she said, “Lastly, I come to my ‘forever’ co-star Sanjay Dutt (smiles). The day Ghudchadi trailer was released, I saw a meme on the internet which read, ‘Ramika Sen and Adhira in a parallel universe’!” She drew parallels with KGF - Chapter 2 (2022) in which both appeared together. While Raveena played the Prime Minister of India, Sanjay Dutt essayed the role of a dreaded antagonist.

She ended her speech by saying. “I have also worked with Sanjay Dutt in so many films. I am fortunate that I always have the support of the media. I guarantee that you’ll love the film. This is a film for the family and made by a family.”

Gulshan Devaiah REACTS To Ulajh Not Getting “Clear Window” In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Gulshan shared his thoughts on the crowded release schedule. He stated, "There is no clear path… There are 52 weeks in a year and so many films are made… There are English films from abroad and films in other languages as well. I hope Ulajh doesn't turn out to be a below-average film, it will be good. I’m sure others also want to make good films, so the audience will decide which one to watch and which one not to. But it is also possible that the audience watches all the films."

He also spoke about the importance of a film’s budget, release strategy, and recovery plan: "It also depends on the budget of the film, how many screens it will be released, how much will be recovered, when it will go into profit, and how expensive it is. These things also matter. Some films have less pressure to earn money."

When asked about the pressure of competition, Gulshan remained unfazed. "I don't take the pressure, if others want to, they can. I am very happy that my film is releasing on the big screen. I am a cinema lover and for cinema lovers, that is what matters. It’s up to the audience to make the film hit or flop. That's not in my hands. I have done what I had to do," he said. Gulshan Devaiah Defends the Portrayal of Spy Agencies The conversation then shifted to the topic of Indian spy films, which have often been criticised for their unrealistic portrayal of espionage work. For the unversed, former RAW head Vikram Sood had previously slammed Indian spy thrillers.

Responding to these criticisms, Gulshan said, "Actually, the public should not know how RAW really operates. It's better if it remains fictional. RAW is a secret agency, and it's good that their working methods remain secret. Some things should be kept hidden. We do it for entertainment. RAW doesn't work for entertainment. They serve the country and protect its security. We entertain people as a service to the country. We are doing our job, and they are doing theirs." Gulshan Devaiah On Balancing Entertainment and Realism Gulshan acknowledged that not every film can be sensible or realistic, stating, "Not every film can be sensible, not every film can be realistic. Some things have to be exaggerated, that's the fun in it. No one will watch Singham to see a realistic policeman. Everyone knows that no one is like that in real life. So, this is just an entertainment story we are creating, and there's nothing realistic in it. We make films for the public."

EXCLUSIVE: Madhur Bhandarkar’s next is the sequel to Priyanka Chopra-Kangana Ranaut starrer Fashion

Acclaimed filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar gave a double treat to his fans in 2022. This was when he had 2 releases, both on OTT – the Tamannaah Bhatia-starrer Babli Bouncer and the intense drama thriller India Lockdown. The award-winning director-producer hasn’t been in the news in a while and Bollywood Hungama has learned that he’s busy preparing for his next project. And this venture happens to be the sequel to one of his much-loved films, Fashion (2008).

The source told Bollywood Hungama, “Madhur Bhandarkar is working on the script of the sequel. It would be based on the current times and would throw light on changes in the fashion industry. The first part was released 16 years ago and since then, the industry has transformed. Madhur wants to throw light on these aspects in his style while also telling a compelling story.”

The source also revealed, “He is already in touch with a studio that is willing to produce Fashion 2. However, at the same time, an OTT platform has reached out to him and shown interest in the sequel. But they wish to have it as a series.”

The source continued, “Hence, Madhur Bhandarkar is now mulling whether the sequel to Fashion should be a film or a web series. He is expected to take a call in a couple of weeks. After that, he’ll start the process of signing actors.”

Fashion starred Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut and both won the National Award in the categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively. It told the story of Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra), a small-town girl who became a supermodel and how her life took a turn for the worse. Kangana Ranaut, meanwhile, essayed Shonali Gujral, a top model who suffered a downfall. The other actors in the film were Mugdha Godse, Arjan Bajwa, Samir Soni, Arbaaz Khan, Chitrashi Rawat and others. Fashion was released on Diwali in 2008 and was loved for its writing, execution, performances and soulful music score by Salim-Sulaiman.

Akshay Kumar Claims He Has Been Cheated Professionally  The actor also revealed a shocking aspect of his career, admitting to being cheated by a few producers. Kumar spoke about his decision to distance himself from those who have wronged him. He said, "This is something we have in common. Main uske baad main usse baat hi nahin karta, chup ho jaata hoon apna side mein nikal jaata hoon... ek do producers ki payment nahin aati hain and that is cheating only... (I just don't talk to that person, who cheats me. I go quiet.. It has happened to me. A few producers haven't cleared my dues)."

Despite these challenges, Akshay Kumar continues to maintain a robust film slate. His recent release, Sarfira, a remake of the critically acclaimed Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, is currently in theaters. On July 18, the T-Series family woke up to the shocking news of the demise of one of their youngest members Tishaa Kumar who was expected to be battling cancer for the past few years. The family came together to issue a joint statement on the demise further requesting privacy from the media. Kiran Rao opens up about box office struggle of Laapataa Ladies; says, “I feel a sense of failure

Kiran Rao returned to direct 14 years after her debut, Dhobi Ghat (2010). Her most recent directorial, Laapataa Ladies, was well-received by the public, but only after it was launched on Netflix India. Laapataa Ladies, When it was first released in theaters, it received few takes. In an interview with Faye D'Souza, Kiran acknowledged that she thinks Laapataa Ladies' box office performance a failure.

Kiran said, “In some ways, both these films Dhobi Ghat and Laapataa Ladies, haven't done great at the box office. Dhobi Ghat, in fact, did some big business for its time. Ten-15 years later, Laapataa Ladies, didn't do that much more than Dhobi Ghat. So, in some ways, I do feel that sense of failure. By box office metrics, we weren't a success. In the conventional sense, we didn't do hundreds of crores, or even ₹30, 40, 50 crore.

She further stated, “Failure is the way to put it. I do feel responsible that the film didn't do that well at the box office. I felt it a lot during Dhobi Ghat because we didn't have any alternate mediums, we didn't have OTT. So it didn't get a lot of audience. I do feel that film was different for its time, and very unusual for a theatrical release back then. But other than that, not really. I haven't felt a deep sense of having failed at something.”

Kiran added, “I think failure in the sense that I felt that everyday failure. In 10 years, I've been working relentlessly. I've had really busy days continuously. After my first film, I thought my second film would come soon. But that soon just didn't come. It got me on a daily basis. The empty page, the inability to put that full stop and say ‘the end.' It was something I really struggled with in these 10 years. I'm sure most creative people have to face that sense of failure a lot when they don't achieve something soon enough or they don't achieve it at all," added Kiran.”

Kareena Kapoor Khan reveals she attended Harvard summer school; says, “I’ve got a photo on that campus”

Kareena Kapoor is one of the most desired actresses in the Hindi cinema business. Kareena, who made her acting debut alongside Abhishek Bachchan in Refugee in 2000, had various ambitions for her career. She considered becoming a lawyer briefly, but she quickly realised that a career as an actor was her destiny. Before she became a movie star, Kareena was interested in academics and even attended Harvard University for a summer course.

Kareena said, “I was a good student. I thought I’d be a lawyer…,” in an interview with The Week. When the interviewer then asked her about the time she did a summer course at Harvard, she said, “Yeah, it was summer school. I am very proud of that, that I went to summer school at Harvard. It’s Harvard, I mean, I’ve got a photo on that campus (chuckles). I thought I’d be a lawyer, I went through this weird phase but (the acting bug) that can’t keep you away.”

Kareena also stated that no one compelled her to pursue a professional path and said, “Just the idea, the fact that nobody really forced me or pushed me (into acting). My parents were happy with whatever I wanted to do. I was bumming around in summer school thinking what I wanted to do. So it was not like somebody was putting that pressure , there was never any pressure from any one of our parents that because they are actors even we have to be.”

When asked if she enjoyed her time at Harvard, Kareena replied, “oOf course, because it taught me to be so much more worldly, connected me, made me more independent in a lot of ways. I was also in a boarding school so that also kind of made me a lot more focused and independent to do what I want to do. It built a lot of confidence, it just does that I think — boarding schools.” Kareena studied at Welham Girls' School in Dehradun, where she was in a boarding.

On the work front, Kareena will next be seen in Singham Again and The Buckingham Murders.

Producer and Allu Arjun’s father Allu Aravind explains what’s ailing Bollywood: “Bombay filmmakers are LOCKED between Bandra and Juhu; they need to realize that UP and Bihar are ALSO there”

Bollywood saw its first film entering the famed Rs. 100 crore club with Ghajini (2008), starring Aamir Khan. It was a remake of the Tamil film of the same name and was produced by Allu Aravind, one of the biggest producers in Telugu cinema and also the father of superstar Allu Arjun. He is known for mass appealing films and during the South India Film Festival held earlier this year in March in Hyderabad, the filmmakers talked about remaking films and where Bollywood is lacking.

During a chat with Mid-Day editor Mayank Shekhar, Allu Aravind explained the difference between the Pan-India phenomenon in the 90s and at present, “Now, the gates are open (smiles). The material, which is being produced in this part of India, is being received very well by audiences all-India. Our dubbed films are, in fact, too well-received there (in the Hindi-speaking markets). This means that the content made here is (appealing there). Then, you might argue that content is being made even there, so why it’s not (working in the same manner as our films). I have a slightly controversial answer to this. But this is what I feel and I should be honest.”

Aravind continued, “I respect Bombay filmmakers and their level of thinking. It’s too good. But at the same time, they are somewhere locked between Bandra and Juhu! They are brought up in Bandra and Juhu and their culture and vision are like that. Hence, they are also making films like that. They need to realize that UP and Bihar are also there. Why are films made in Telugu and Tamil being more liked by the Bihar and UP people? This is because of the content. There’s no separate love for us.”

He also said, “Now, I spoke to a couple of people (in the Hindi film industry). I don’t want to name them. They have realized and are trying to make (films that appeal to a larger audience). This specific recognition of the South will soon disappear as our Bombay filmmakers also make (mainstream, appealing films). I think all-India films will be made by all industries now, whenever they pick up a content and a budget to that regard.”

Janhvi Kapoor stunned everyone at the Ulajh launch ceremony. The actor was asked if the 'secret' she posted on her Instagram stories had anything to do with her marriage to her rumoured boyfriend, Shikhar Pahariya and she had responded hilariously.

Janhvi took to her Instagram stories on Monday morning and wrote, “Guys!! I have a secret. Can’t wait to share it with you!” The secret, as it turned out, was about the trailer launch of her upcoming film Ulajh. In the evening, when she was attending an event for the film, a reporter asked her, “Janhvi, is there some wedding news?” She hilariously replied, “Are you mad?” Then she was asked what the ‘secret’ she posted was about, and she said, “You’ll know tomorrow.”

Janhvi and Shikhar make frequent public appearances together. They've attended red carpet events and Bollywood parties together, as well as a trip to Tirupathi with Orry. Janhvi once flaunted a necklace with the word Shiku engraved on it. The most recent event where they were spotted together was Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding. Shikhar even hooted as she posed for photos in a gold lehenga.

On Koffee With Karan, she also hinted at their on-off relationship in season 2. When Karan Johar asked her to identify three persons from her speed dial list, she said, "Papa, Khushu (Khushi Kapoor), and Shikuuu (Shikhar)." Later, she was cautious, saying, "Just because we are really good friends."

Janhvi recently appeared in Mr & Mrs Mahi with Rajkummar Rao. Sharan Sharma directed the film, in which she played a doctor turned cricketer. She will soon appear in Sudhanshu Saria's Ulajh, which stars Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Tailang, and Adil Hussain, as well as Shashank Khaitan's Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which stars Varun Dhawan.

Janhvi will make her Tollywood debut in Koratala Siva's Devara: Part 1, which stars Jr NTR. She portrays Thangam in the film. She will also co-star with Ram Charan in his upcoming film, Buchi Babu Sana.

Saif Ali Khan shoots action sequences and songs in Budapest for Jewel Thief – The Red Sun Chapter; patchwork shoot remains in Mumbai before wrap: Report

Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat are set to unleash their inner heist masters in the upcoming film Jewel Thief - The Red Sun Chapter. The project, produced by Siddharth Anand and directed by Robbie Grewal, promises a thrilling tale of international intrigue and high-stakes robbery.

According to a report in Mid-day, the film's journey began in Mumbai, where an extensive shooting schedule captured the bustling energy of the city. This initial phase laid the groundwork for the complex heist at the center of the story. Report suggests that Khan and Ahlawat's characters will find themselves on opposite sides of the law, their rivalry fueling the narrative.

Following the Mumbai leg, the production team embarked on a European adventure, taking the story to the picturesque locales of Budapest, Hungary. Khan, Ahlawat, Kunal Kapoor, and Nikita Dutta all joined forces for this international shoot. While Budapest served as the backdrop for some captivating song sequences featuring Khan and Dutta, it also witnessed the filming of thrilling chase sequences.

An inside source revealed, “The final leg began on May 18 as they filmed songs featuring Saif and Nikita against the picturesque locales of Budapest. Some action-packed chase sequences were also canned in the 10-day stint. Robbie has envisioned Jewel Thief as a slick heist thriller, with the leading man sporting a suave look, complete with a ponytail. Saif has also built a chiselled, six-pack physique, for which he has been working out since last year.”

With the international schedule wrapped up in late May, the film nears completion. A brief patchwork shoot will take place in Mumbai next month, focusing on capturing cityscapes and car sequences. The source adds, “It will be only a few days of filming that will include some city and car shots. Robbie is currently neck-deep in post-production and wants to wrap it up by October.”

Jewel Thief - The Red Sun Chapter marks a significant reunion for Siddharth Anand and Saif Ali Khan. The duo last collaborated on the 2007 film Ta Ra Rum Pum. Bakhtiyaar Irani reveals last-minute casting change in Sara Ali Khan's Ae Watan Mere Watan; recalls losing 8kg for role: “It was a very big jhatka”

Actor Bakhtiyaar Irani shared an interesting tidbit in a recent interview. He revealed that he was originally cast in Dharma Productions' film Ae Watan Mere Watan, starring Sara Ali Khan, but was replaced at the final stages.

Bakhtiyaar Irani On Preparing For Ae Watan Mere Watan Role During his appearance on Inside The Mind With Rushabh, Bakhtiyaar spoke about being approached for the historical biopic. Excited about the opportunity, he even underwent a physical transformation for the part. "The director told me I was too bulky for the 1940s setting," he said. Following a strict diet and workout plan, Bakhtiyaar managed to lose 8 kgs in just a month and a half. Bakhtiyaar Irani On Being Replaced At The Last Minute  "Everything seemed finalized," Bakhtiyaar continued. "The director said 'next week contract signing' and I told my close circle – about 30 people – because I was so sure." However, the contract signing never happened. The role eventually went to another actor. Uncertain Reasons for Replacement Bakhtiyaar admitted his disappointment, attributing the change to bad luck. He also expressed his lack of understanding behind the decision. "Bigger name, not necessarily a good actor," he stated, highlighting that he had undergone proper auditions and impressed the director. The Role in Question While Bakhtiyaar didn't directly name the character, it's believed to be the role of Firdaus Engineer, portrayed by Anand Tiwari in the film. Interestingly, Anand Tiwari has since gone on to direct Dharma Productions' upcoming film Bad Newz, starring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk.
