EXCLUSIVE Jim Sarbh recalls the time he jumped off a moving train to follow a phone thief at a Mumbai local train station

During an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Jim Sarbh narrated an incident that happened at a crowded Bandra station. “I was at the Bandra station climbing down the stairs and I was going to a yoga class in town. I had a pair of little shorts on and a vest. My phone was in my right pocket and I had a backpack. I was walking down the stairs and you know, you do what you do when you get on a train, you take your phone out and put it in your bag and move your bag to the front of your body. I got a call as I was walking down and I took the phone out of the bag. It was my friend Sukriti and I told her I am just getting on the train, I'll call you back. The train came and it was very crowded and I put my phone in my pocket. One more detail, I know I will have to stand through the journey, so I thought I will stand and read. Now my bag is in the front, my phone in my right pocket and my book in my right hand.”

“I got into the train making my way through the crowd and as I was elbowing people and all, I felt my pocket become light. But I didn't know whether somebody had taken it or because it was so crowded that somebody’s weight had pushed the phone up that I can no longer feel it. So I did not want to cause a scene until I was sure. So, I was trying to get my hand down to check and while that was happening, if you have travelled in the train you know you are pushed into the compartment as well simultaneously. So, I am looking at the person next to me, green shirt brown hair. We are being pushed together, I am trying to get my hand down to check. The train starts moving and the green shirt brown hair guy makes his way through the crowd and jumps from the train. I check my pocket and the phone is gone,” he added.

“I moved everyone and lept from the train. By now, the train had picked up speed, so I fell and landed on my stomach which had the bag luckily. So I didn’t hit my face or hurt myself too badly. The skin on my feet and hand was scraped and I popped up and said green shirt brown hair. I turned and started jogging in the direction of where I thought he got off the train. I see him and he sees me and he knows that I know it's him. He is walking amid a group of people and he has made eye contact with me and he walks out of the group of people and hands over the phone. I stopped because I was ready for him to run and then tackle him. He just pulled out the phone and did not even say a word. If he had said even a word, I was ready to grab him. He did not say one word. I snatched the phone, we kept looking at each other's eyes for two minutes and he turned around and ran away,” he said.
