25 years of Satya: Ram Gopal Varma reveals Urmila Matondkar's sarees in film cost 10 times more than all other actors' costume

The critically acclaimed crime thriller Satya, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, turned 25 on July 3, 2023. The film explored the dark underbelly of Mumbai's underworld and became a cult classic. Recently, Manoj Bajpayee, Shefali Shah, Saurabh Shukla, and RGV spoke about the making of the film, including their costume costs. RGV revealed that Urmila Matondkar's sarees in the 1998 film Satya cost “10 times more” than all other actors' costumes combined.

In a conversation with Film Companion, Manoj recalled, “Now things are so organised, the costume designers and all that. Ramu asked me to just go to his production person and take some money. So I went to Hill Road, Bandra. I found this very small place and I wanted something very flamboyant. I bought about 20 shirts. I wanted that kind of colourfulness and the flamboyance. But for Rs 20,000 rupees my costume was done.”

On this, RGV asserted, “I doubt if it was more than 2000.” Later, Shefali shared, “I remember them getting me sarees, and I did not want new sarees. I told them to just get me used sarees. I even wore my own saree for a dinner sequence. I even wore my own jewellery. My grandmother was a Maharashtrian, so I had that advantage (Maharashtrian jewellery).”

As the conversation progressed further, Saurabh said, “My costume came from Tamil Nadu. I had a lungi. It was a Brahmin lungi, which came from Tamil Nadu. It was the most expensive costume. It was Rs 3500.” Meanwhile, RGV added, “I don’t know about the individual costs, but for sure Urmila’s was 10 times more [than] all of them put together.”
