Shahid Kapoor opens up about Kabir Singh's controversy and character portrayal; says I've seen physical abuse as a child

Shahid Kapoor achieved his greatest box office triumph with Kabir Singh, a Hindi remake directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, which was adapted from Vanga's original Telugu film, Arjun Reddy. While the film shattered numerous box office records, it also faced criticism for its protagonist's problematic behaviour. The movie received backlash for promoting toxic masculinity, igniting extensive discussions on the depiction of gender roles within the film.

Shahid told Mid-Day, “I've seen physical abuse as a child. I understand what you're talking about. But it was just a dysfunctional love story between a very simple girl and a very talented, brilliant, aggressive, disturbed guy. And stuff like that happens on a day-today basis.”

Shahid further explained that he did not perceive the character of Kabir Singh as either a 'hero' or an 'anti-hero,' but simply as the central character of a narrative. He emphasized that not every protagonist is a morally upright person, drawing a parallel to the character of Devdas who physically mistreated Paro. Shahid clarified that he held a positive opinion of the film Devdas despite the flawed nature of its protagonist.

Shahid also said, “My point is, in love, have we all not messed up? Are we all perfect human beings? Everyone deserves a second chance, however rubbish they might be. If you're saying, ‘This guy is a great guy! He did everything right.’ Nobody said that. You go see the promo, every line in that promo says, ‘He’s disturbed. He's a problem. He has anger management issues. He cannot be accepted by society, and he is self-destructive. So right at the beginning of the promo, you're establishing that this is a film about this kind of a character. At no point was he said to be this great guy. But I guess (for) some people, it becomes about right and wrong. But I feel all kinds of things happen in life, and we can show them.”

Meanwhile on the film, Shahid Kapoor was last seen in Bloody Daddy which released on JioCinema which was helmed by Ali Abbas Zafar. He was previously seen in Raj & DK helmed web series Farzi that is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. He will be soon seen alongside Kriti Sanon in an untitled Maddock film. The poster of the film is out and is expected to release on December 7.
