20 Years of Baghban: Lyricist Sameer reveals he narrated the song ‘Main Yahaan Tu Wahaan’ a few days after the demise of B R Chopra’s wife: “He started crying on hearing the first line. He felt as if I had written the song keeping him and his deceased wife in mind”
The tearjerker Baghban (2003) celebrates its 20th anniversary today on October 3. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, the film worked strongly due to the emotional moments. A touching scene in the film is when Amitabh’s character Raj Malhotra calls his wife Pooja, played by Hema Malini and sings the song ‘Main Yahaan Tu Wahaan’. Viewers were left teary-eyed and even today, the scene compels them to shed a tear. The powerful words of the track were written by none other than the legendary lyricist, Sameer. At an event held in June this year, Sameer opened up on writing this song and shared a rare trivia.
Sameer was specifically asked about the song ‘Main Yahaan Tu Wahaan’. He said, “I was apprised of the situation of the song in the film. I was also informed that Mr Amitabh Bachchan is going to sing the song. I wrote the mukhda and went to meet B R Chopra saab. Now it so happened that just a few days before our meeting, Chopra saab’s wife had passed away. I mentioned the first line of the song ‘Main Yahaan Tu Wahaan’, his reaction wasn’t encouraging. He told me, ‘Bahut hi simple line hai. Aage kya hai, pehle who sunta hoon’. As soon as I uttered the complete line, ‘Main Yahaan Tu Wahaan, Zindagi Hai Kahaan’, he started crying. He felt as if I had written the song keeping him and his deceased wife in mind.”
Sameer continued, “He was nearly 90 years old at that time. His memory had started fading. Kabhi kabhi woh bhool jaate the. But the way he reacted to the song and the way Aadesh Shrivastava composed it so beautifully, we knew it would work. The audiences in theatres reacted the same way as B R Chopra. That’s why he was legendary. Unhe pata chal jaata tha ki kaunsa gaana kitna wazan rakhta hai aur kitna accha hai aur uska reaction kya hoga. I was happy writing all the songs as even today, people talk about it.”
Baghban was co-written and produced by B R Chopra and it was directed by Ravi Chopra. Sameer spoke about this trivia at the success party of Octave Music’s song ‘Sapne Jo Dekhe They’ in the presence of stalwarts like Alka Yagnik, Anand-Milind, Neeraj Sridhar and others.
