EXCLUSIVE: Harshvardhan Rane does an Aamir Khan; goes around colleges to distribute pamphlets of Dange; leaves his female fans STUNNED: “Main toh canteen mein ghus ke de raha hoon. Log soch rahe hai, ‘Yeh kahan se aa gaya’”
The trailer of Dange was unveiled on February 17 and got noticed thanks to its youthful appeal, catchy music and stylized edit. What has also been noticed is the way lead actor Harshvardhan Rane has adopted a unique strategy to promote the action entertainer. Since the last few days, he has been visiting several colleges and distributing pamphlets of Dange himself. The video that the actor has posted shows students astonished to see the dashing actor in front of them. It makes for a great watch and it instantly reminds one of a similar strategy adopted by Aamir Khan while promoting his debut film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). The video of the superstar putting up his film’s poster on the auto rickshaws in Mumbai is quite well-known.
Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Harshvardhan Rane to understand what made him opt for such a promotional tactic. He said, “It’s a very basic idea if you ask me. I don’t know why people feel it’s a very cool strategy. Since childhood, I have seen in my hometown Gwalior that whenever a shop was inaugurated or when the circus used to come to the town, pamphlets used to be distributed. Nowadays, they are called flyers. Hum toh isko pamphlet hi bolte the. These pamphlets used to come in fluorescent colours, either bright pink or bright green. So, this idea was imprinted deeply in my mind.”
He continued, “Meanwhile, I saw that my director and my producer have given their best. I have given my best while shooting. I wondered how I give my best during promotions. On social media, we all are anyway asking viewers to come and watch our film. But I wanted to do more and that’s how I got the idea of distributing pamphlets.”
So how do students react when they see none other than Harshvardhan Rane distributing the flyer? The actor answered, “They hold their mouth (laughs). Sometimes, their mouth is open. They don’t know what to say. Main toh canteen mein ghus ke de raha hoon. Log soch rahe hai, ‘Yeh kahan se aa gaya’! Of course, I take permission from the college authorities.”
He continued, “Koi stardom wali baat nahin hai. It’s just that they don’t expect. They expect that I’ll maintain a distance and I’ll convey my message on social media. But I have not followed any norms. Why will I do now (smiles)?”
Was he inspired by Aamir Khan? The actor clarified, “I remember reading Aamir sir’s interview (about doing the same). He had put up posters of his film. I don’t think he distributed flyers. But yeah, I get your point that it’s in the same zone. On-ground promotion hi tha woh bhi.”
Harshvardhan Rane then spoke about his game plan, “Every day, I cover 2-3 colleges. Today (Saturday, February 17), I completed 10 colleges. The whole team of film promoted the film in 1 college while I alone went and promoted it in 10 colleges. I feel when you take the whole entourage and security, you achieve less. Instead, I believe that utho, basic kapde pehno, flyers uthao, college mein ghuso aur dhaava bol do (laughs)!”
Harshvardhan Rane achieved a huge fan following thanks to his debut Hindi film, Sanam Teri Kasam (2016). His subsequent films failed to do well. His last flick, Tara vs Bilal (2022), got a namesake release in a handful of cinemas and it saddened his fans since it was a fine effort. Harshvardhan smiled as he remarked, “I believe in the Bhagavad Gita’s saying that I have done my karm; I shouldn’t be thinking of anything else. I focus on the trailer, how I have acted and how my director has directed. If I start thinking about the box office results, fir toh mushkil ho jaayegi. Some of the biggest actors have not been able to figure out (the box office). If they are not able to figure, then who am I?”
He added, “I am getting work without box office. It’s not like I have given Rs. 100 crore grossers. Without any box office success, I have worked in 9 films. That goes to say something and I am not going to depend on box office for getting work.”
Harshvardhan Rane signed off by saying, “I am thankful. Every day, I call my director Bejoy Nambiar and tell him, ‘Sir, this is an emotional call’. He laughs when I say that. I then tell him how proud I am of myself and him.”
Besides Harshvardhan, Dange also stars Ehan Bhat, Nikita Dutta and T J Bhanu. It releases in cinemas on March 1.
