Imtiaz Ali says “Agar kisi ke dimaag mein kahaani aaye, toh mujhe bata dena. Main Rockstar 2 bana dunga” at the screening of Ranbir Kapoor-starrer at PVR Lido

PVR Inox Limited revamped the landmark Lido cinema in Juhu, Mumbai and revamped it into a three-screen multiplex, PVR Lido. It was opened on May 31 and on June 5, a special event was held wherein Ranbir Kapoor’s cult film Rockstar (2011) was screened. Director Imtiaz Ali graced the occasion along with Ajay Bijli, Managing Director, PVR INOX Ltd. They addressed the audience before the screening.

Imtiaz Ali humbly began by saying, “I don’t know what to expect. I saw this film two weeks back at another PVR theatre. I was thinking ‘Aaj main film poori nahin dekhunga. Beech mein chala jaunga’. But now I feel that I should watch it. This is because many of my friends are here who have worked on Rockstar.” Imtiaz also said that he’d watch the film sitting on the steps!

He then introduced the crew members of Rockstar, who were present at the screening, “There's choreographer Ashley Lobo, Dileep Subramaniam, who worked on the sound and Sunaina Bhatnagar was the AD and is a director. Sandeep Leyzell was the line producer and now he's a producer. Main unke office ke chakkar aaj kal kaat raha hoon! Then we have Ashima Chibber, who was the first AD and is now a hugely famous director. Finally, Mukesh Chhabra did the casting for every film of mine after Love Aaj Kal (2009), is also here.”

Imtiaz praised Ajay Bijli as he told him, “My first film, Socha Na Tha (2005), had premiered in a PVR theatre. The greatest thing you have done is to keep the dream alive. We all live and die for the big screen.”

Imtiaz Ali recently made Amar Singh Chamkila, a biopic on the highest-selling record artist of Punjab. When asked which director’s biopic he’d like to attempt, Imtiaz took a pause and then answered, “I don’t know about the lives of directors as much. I think more than the movies, the life of the filmmaker, will be important (to be showcased in a film). Hence, it has to be something who has lived a dramatic life. Hence, maybe, Guru Dutt (can make for an ideal biopic of a director).”

When asked if a sequel to Rockstar can ever be made, Imtiaz Ali, at first, tried to avoid giving an answer. He then said, “Agar kisi ke dimaag mein kahaani aaye, toh mujhe bata dena. Main (Rockstar 2) bana dunga!”

Besides Ranbir Kapoor, Rockstar also starred Nargis Fakhri, Kumud Mishra, Piyush Mishra and the late Shammi Kapoor. Its music by A R Rahman has achieved legendary status. Interestingly, the re-release of Rockstar has been very successful and has collected more than Rs. 1 crore and counting.
