South Wave takes over Bollywood: Why Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Varun Dhawan are betting on South Directors for mass appeal
The South impact is real, and our stars have woken up to it, more so after the blockbuster success of Pushpa 2 – The Rule, which has crossed the Rs. 700 crores mark in Hindi. In fact, the realization happened even before the release of the Allu Arjun-starrer. It's no surprise that they have started working with South filmmakers and it's paying dividends. Shah Rukh Khan’s collaboration with Atlee, Jawan, emerged as his biggest hit. Salman Khan is currently working on Sikandar, directed by A R Murugadoss of Ghajini (2008) and Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014) fame. Varun Dhawan’s Christmas release, Baby John, is produced by Atlee and directed by Kalees.
Do we lack commercial directors or have our actors lost trust in the existing rare breed of directors who make mass-appealing cinema? Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal said, “Our actors have realized that hamare directors aur writers mein dum hi nahin hai. That’s why they have started going South. That is very unfortunate.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, stated, “A lot of Bollywood actors don’t have confidence that our Bollywood directors would be able to pull it off.” Trade veteran Taran Adarsh explained that this trend began as “those filmmakers are making those entertainers. Their conviction is very strong.”
Atul Mohan, however, also said that the current system is such that promising subjects at times don’t reach the actor, “Actors have managers and a whole team. They don’t have knowledge. Who are they to decide what film an actor should sign or not sign? Why are there so many filters between an actor and a director? As a result, interesting subjects don’t reach an actor.”
