REVEALED: "Ajay Devgn has told me several times, 'Anees bhai, Deewangee ka part 2 hona chahiye'" - Anees Bazmee
Anees Bazmee is synonymous with comedy. Most of the films which he has penned were comedies. Even his most memorable directorial ventures like No Entry (2005), Welcome (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008) etc. were laugh-a-minute riots. However, in 2002, he switched genres and made Deewangee. Starring Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna and Urmila Matondkar, the suspense thriller had a great story and performances. Ajay especially took the cake. The scene where he tells the truth to Akshaye’s character turned out to be one of the greatest scenes of all time. He was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Villain, and rightly so.
Interestingly, Anees Bazmee never stepped into this scene ever again. At a recent media interaction for the promotion of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, he was asked whether he’d like to make another suspense fare? To which he replied, “I don’t think that I have to make a film of a particular genre. I make films which my heart tells me to.”
Having been reminded of Deewangee, Anees Bazmee expressed a desire to make a sequel of it. He revealed, “Deewangee is a film close to my heart. Ajay Devgn has told me several times, ‘Anees bhai, Deewangee ka part 2 hona chahiye’. Even I’d like to make one. However, I can do that only if I get the correct story, toh fir film yun shuru ho jaayegi because both Ajay and I are eager to work with each other. We have been friends for a long time.”
Anees Bazmee continued. “Deewangee was released 20 years. So in the present-day, Ajay Devgn ka character Tarang aur mature ho gaya hai. Toh ab woh kitna zyada shrewd hoga. At that point, he had escaped from a murder conviction by pretending to be a split personality disorder patient. He crazily loves Sargam (Urmila Matondkar). He even says ‘Biwi maanta hoon main usko. 56 baar chaaku chal jaata hai aur pata tak nahi chalta’. So imagine how dangerous he would be 20 years later. So, when we get the right script, I’d love to make Deewangee 2.”
