EXCLUSIVE: "Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan has the BIGGEST interval point. Aisa interval scene kisi ne nahin dekha hoga" - Farhad Samji

The much-awaited film, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, starring Salman Khan is all set to release in cinemas in less than 10 days, April 21. Director Farhad Samji, however, appeared cool as a cucumber, not worrying about the humongous expectations, as he exclusively spoke to Bollywood Hungama about the film, working with Salman and a lot more.

Congrats on the superb buzz generated by Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. As they say in the trade circles, film kaafi garam hai… It has to be. At the end of the day, it is Salman bhai’s film (smiles).

If I speak about your film directorials, all your movies featured Akshay Kumar. With Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, this is the first time you are not working with him. Can we say this was a case of moving out of the comfort zone? And how was it to work with Salman Khan? I’ll cherish this experience for the rest of my life. I don’t agree that I stepped out of my comfort zone. I am a writer first and then a director. We had written the protagonist in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan in a certain way. So, it was a pleasure to see how Salman bhai performed the part that we had written. And as a producer, he went all out. I have seen how he put in so much effort to ensure the songs are picturized well and have a certain scale and grandeur. All this was given to me on a platter. He’s also very sensible.

Also, it’s not just about scale. Drishyam 2 (2022) did more than Rs. 200 crores. It was not a typical big-screen film. It’s all about the intensity and the power to hold the audience till the end of the film. In this regard, he has done complete justice to ensure that the film remains gripping throughout.

Moreover, there are 10 more things to be taken care of besides creativity. You need to look at the technical side, like how to show action, how to do the storyboard for action etc. He sat with all of us on these aspects. We got huge support from the action director Anal Arasu and cinematographer V Manikandan. Both were strong pillars of the film. Their assistance with the technical aspects proved immensely useful.

At Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’s trailer launch, Salman Khan opened up on how many in the team were unsure if ‘Naiyo Lagda’ would work. But he did hint that you had liked the song. So, were you sure that this song would be accepted? So, what happened is that we have a buffet of songs. Choice bahut tha. It’s like mere 5-6 sweet se bacche hai. Toh main kisko pehle present karu sabke saamne? That was our dilemma. I equally like ‘Yentamma’ and ‘Billi Billi’. We were wondering if these tracks should be launched first to create a dhamaka? So, it was collective confusion going on between Zee Studios’ marketing team and us.

Salman sir came forward and said, “Agar tum log ka confusion hai, toh main duur karta hoon. ‘Naiyo Lagda’ release kar do pehle. Yehi correct hai.” So, it was not like we didn’t like ‘Naiyo Lagda’. We just were not sure if this song should be out first. Nevertheless, we went ahead with Salman sir’s suggestion. And he gets 100 out of 100 marks as it has become the biggest chartbuster.

A lot is expected from Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan in terms of box office collections. What are your thoughts and is there any lifetime earnings number in your mind? I request you to speak about box office numbers to the producers. I am focusing on the film’s scene numbers! Right now, my focus is also on ‘Edit mein yeh cheez nikalte hai, yeh cheez rakhte hai, yeh action scene badhate hai, slow motion add karte hai’ etc. Even as we speak, I am working on the final edit. So, I can speak on these things. For instance, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan has the biggest interval point. Aisa interval scene kisi ne nahin dekha hoga. We have also worked hard on the climax action to ensure that Salman sir’s heroism is shown in all its glory. I can discuss such selling points and the creative aspects of the film, and not the box office.

You have written the dialogues for Shankar’s film Game Changer, starring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani. This is the first time you have worked in a South film… Yeah, and I wonder why we created boundaries that ‘This is a Bollywood film’ or ‘This is a South film’. We are all Indians. And it’s not that I am writing Telugu dialogues. I am writing the Hindi dialogues. It was a fun experience working with Shankar and Ram Charan. The way they work with so much dedication, hats off to them! I am fortunate to be a part of Game Changer.

What are your other projects apart from Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, Hera Pheri and Game Changer? Also, you always keep coming up with so many projects at regular intervals, in the capacity of a film director, web series director or dialogue writer. How do you manage? There are 3-4 films in the pipeline. I can’t disclose right now, and I can only say that I am damn excited about them. And I like working. 10 minutes after waking up, mujhe bechaini hoti hai if there’s nothing on my plate. Kaam chalte rehna chahiye. It’s not just to earn rozi-roti. It’s a pattern and it’s a habit to do good work. I don’t believe in the notion that zyada kaam karoge toh kaam bigad jaayega. Aisa kuch nahin hota hai. You need to prioritize and plan things well. A person eats daily, sleeps daily, plays with his/her kids daily and spends time with his/her spouse daily. Toh yeh sab karne ke saath-saath woh aur ek film kyun nahin likh sakta?

Will you be going to cinema theatres, especially Gaiety-Galaxy, to check the audience's reaction to Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan on the day of its release, that is, April 21? For sure. I want to see the hysteria that the film will create in cinemas. Woh dekhna toh banta hi hai. Wife ke saath honeymoon cancel kar sakte hai lekin Gaiety-Galaxy mein audience reaction dekhna cancel nahin kar sakte!

Final thoughts? I want this film to work for our industry. Hamare industry mein ek badi problem yeh hai ki jitni kaamyaabi se mohabbat hai, utni hi kamyaab logon se nafrat hai. We need to change this mindset. We should be united and should support each other. If Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan works, there’ll be josh in the industry. We need to lift our film industry to another level.
